Solid starts app is great at showing how to serve and prep. We do purees and lumpy foods atm and will move onto solids soon ish. I gave one thing a day initially to test for allergies but now she has 2 meals a day and mix them up. Can give tap water when baby is 6m old. I started off with broccoli and vegs first so that baby doesn't get used to the sweet fruit taste. Now she has everything as she's 7m old and we are doing 2 meals now.
We are also doing baby led weaning. Our first week of 'meals' was: - two floret of broccoli (boil until slightly soft and leave to cook out of the boiling water and check as hot water stays in the florets for ages) - two slices of avocado (recommend buying a crinkle cutter so it's easier for babies to pick the food up) - carrot in a puree, given on spoons. Just leave the spoons on the side of the plate for the baby to pick up. - mushed avocado with a bit of yoghurt in to test for dairy allergy - oven roasted butternut squash cut into fingers with a crincle cutter It took about 2 weeks for our baby to work out how to put a spoon in her mouth and not in her hair/nose etc but we literally didn't feed her anything and she has worked it out herself as it doesn't matter if they don't eat much. We often are similar food at the same time so she could see us eating it too
I also use the solid starts app to work out how to serve everything. We are two weeks in and now adapting what we serve for our baby, even if it's just the veg we have with our tea we will give her a bit of that and not the main. Other times we take the pasta sauce and mash it with a fork and give let her have it on spoons. Getting sticky toffee spoon consistency is key though! Hope your first week of weaning goes well and you all enjoy it 😊
@Julia thank you so much! Can you give them bottled water or is just tap water best x
@Samina thank you! Do you ever give snacks? Some friends have said about giving her them melty puff things but would I just give them them as one thing a day to try? X
@Helen this is so helpful thank you so much! If she doesn’t even attempt put it in her mouth do you suggest trying or just leave her to it? X
@Helen thank you so much! X
@Lucy Just tap water as bottled water has too much sodium in it x
@Lucy you're welcome hun, no snacks atm as I don't want her getting full with them and not eating meals but I plan to give melty puffs if I'm out and about. Health professionals advise no snacks till after 1 as it can often replace meals/ milk. You could give it just to try and get her used to blw. X
We do a mix of BLW and purées. The solids start appearing is really good as it shows you how to serve things. I recommend for the first month to do one thing at a time as you never know what baby might react to as we’ve had reactions to wheat, oats, eggs, bananas, strawberries and tomatoes. And then once you know baby is okay with things you can start to mix it together. Best to start with veg so baby doesn’t get used to the sweet taste of fruit. You can just give tap water once they are 6 months x
