Tummy getting used to cows milk

We’ve only recently made the switch to cows milk and it’s all been fine, except it’s making my daughter constipated. She’s having really hard painful poos. I’ve tried fruit juice etc, but have had to give her lactulose because she’s really struggling. How long did it take your lo’s to get used to the milk, I’m tempted to switch back to formula, I hate seeing her in pain

We had to get lactalose from the doctors for my little girl which worked for a while now we’re onto movical. I’m not glad for your baby but I’m glad someone is going through the same thing as I was feeling like we was the only one and my doctors didn’t want to know. Weve been trialling green milk and seems to help slightly, only thing is her reflux is back worse than ever. If this doesn’t work we’re going to cut milk completely and give her daily dairy intake through yogurts or cheese. Been told she doesn’t actually need milk by doctors but health visitor says she still needs it so contradicting information. X

@Dominique aww, yes that’s another thing, my daughter eats ALOT of yoghurt, it’s her favourite. I’m just worried about her getting used to the lactulose and not being able to go without it (not sure if they can become dependent on it) did your docs say how long she could be on it?

No they said to trial a month on two doses a day then cut down to one and see how she does, if still all okay then try and cut it out and see but we’ve had to go to movical which is stronger as even with lactalose she’s like rock hard pebbles to the point she’s bled, the screaming in pain is horrendous as well, took her yesterday as her reflux is so bad, she’s uncomfortable and some days it’s so bad can’t even sit her up or pick her up without hysterical crying in pain. She checked her stomach and she’s tore a little from straining so much

What about giving non dairy milk? Humans aren’t designed to drink cow milk, we don’t naturally produce lactase to break it down. Non dairy milk is just as nutritious (it’s actually more nutritious) It’s a tradition in the uk to give cow milk but it’s not what nature intended, no need to try and find a way for them to have it. Soy milk and pea milk are excellent for growing toddlers

@Dominique same thing happened with my daughter, that was when I got the lactulose 😣 made me feel terrible, she ran over to me crying her eyes out. Have you tried any alternative milks? I might give that a go as @Natalie suggested

@Natalie it’s not actually something that I’d considered, I might give it a go. Not sure she’ll take to the taste though

I agree with Natalie, give it a go! My little one had awful reflux on formula, he’s now on oat milk (just pick one with iodine in though) and he’s not been sick on it and loves it x

Thought about it going to give it a go, I’m gonna research and see which is recommended, think I’m going to try oat milk instead x

@NatalieAny brands of alternative milk you recommend? X

@Dominique I use oatly whole, usually on offer x

@Dominique https://www.srnutrition.co.uk/2024/10/comparing-plant-based-milk-alternatives-for-children/ This guide is helpful :). We personally use Mighty Pea or Alpro Growing Up x

Oatly barista tastes the most like dairy. It’s definitely worth a go, dairy causes reflux but also asthma , inflammation, ibs, mucus, and a host of skin conditions x

My girl struggled with the transition too, we also struggle generally with her water intake which doesn’t help! She ended up in A&E at one point as she was so constipated they had to do an enema to help her get it out 😣 One thing we found helped was Optibac probiotics, the blue one for babies not the drops. Just added to her milk. Also prunes, bananas, just fibre as much as we could! When it was particularly bad we did also use lactulose to help her. She’s been on cows milk 2 months now and has been fine for the last month really, we still use optibac in general but haven’t had to use the lactulose. I think her tummy has settled with it, it’s best to continue with the cows milk as they will need to get used to it (I was advised this by the doctor) x

My doctors think she may be intolerant to too much cows milk. We was advised to go full dairy free but we decided to just change the main things and for the past week she’s been on oatly barista as was recommended on here and she’s like a different baby. She’s fine with her baby yoghurts but we’ve switched to dairy free as she loves them and also cheese. She doesn’t like butter so that’s easy. She doesn’t really eat cheese but switched as high in dairy. Going to toilet no problem now and her reflux has settled. No gaviscon or movical since we switched so staying with oat milk for the time being ❤️ Hope everything settles with your little one xx
