Genetic Counselling

We are starting our IVF journey and our consultant has asked us to first see a Genetic Counsellor due to a condition I have, and a condition my partner's grandfather has. Has anyone seen a genetic counsellor as part of the IVF process? I'm really not sure what to expect. What do they even do?! 😂

It is not an assessment based on what parent they think you would be it is more explaining and answering any questions you have about the IVF process as well as how you think you would handle a child with a potential condition and what support systems you have. ❤️

Yes, we had a session because we were interested in doing the PGT A testing. They went through with us Information and stats on it. By the time of our egg retrieval, we had forgotten about what grading the embryos had to meet to be able to qualify for PGT A (the rest would be discarded) so that may be something interesting to note. I understand different clinics have different grading thresholds. Ours was at least a B grading i.e. a BC graded embryo would be discarded. Although you mentioned about pre-existing/ hereditary genetic conditions, maybe this may be less relevant as my comments are just for PGT-A testing.

Thank you both! I think ours will likely be genetic carrier testing, but that's interesting as well about the PGT A testing!

Hi. So the job of the genetic counsellor would be to look at the family history and the conditions to determine the risks and then to explain how PGT-M (for know conditions) works and the limitations and all info about the process (example the test kit they might need to create). Also to see if you have genetic results for you and your partner because to do PGT-M you need to have done genetic testing and use that for the embryo testing. In some settings they first do PGT-A testing to eliminate the embroyos with chromosomal anomalies and then go on to do PGT-M on the normal embroyos as it doesn't help to eliminate the condition you have but then the embryo has a chromosomal thing that would not result in pregnancy - some settings mighy only do PGT-M without PGT-A. It would be the genetic counsellor who should discuss the testing options and procedures available and then help you decide what works for the couple and how to proceed
