PPD

4 months into motherhood and I definitely have PPD, I’ve had general mild depression for the last 10 years that I’ve managed myself. I think I’m at the stage of ringing the GP, but also have a massive phobia of the doctors and being a nuisance. Can anyone speak about their experience with getting help/ what do I even say to get an appointment and where would they go on from there ? Thanks in advance.

Hey hun, hope you are doing ok! Definitely chat with your GP. I ended talking to them 10mo pp and got help really quickly as when you have a young one at home they see you as priority. My local trust has a self referral website so if you don’t feel like talking to your GP check if that’s an option. I was contact about 2 days after filling the form and started my 1-2-1 sessions about 10 days after. It was pretty quick which I was impressed. I was also offered to do group sessions but I chose 1-2-1 CBT sessions. There where weekly and via phone for about 2 months

Hiya, I went to the GP when LO was about 3 months, she’s 5 months now. I had it all planned out with now I was going to calmly explain how I was feeling but ended up a teary mess instead but the GP was really great, helpful and understanding, prescribed antidepressants and referred me for counselling. I also had the Health visitor involved, who has been offering extra support and also referred me. They make you a priority with a child under 2. I had an assessment with Steps 2 Wellbeing, it was a 3 week wait after being referred, oh it might be called something else in your area I don’t know. She suspected PPA and mild PPD. I got onto a 6 week group therapy sessions a week later. They are 1.5 hours and over zoom, it’s mostly coping mechanisms and interventions. It’s been helpful so far, at the end of the 6 weeks I’ll have another assessment and if I need any further help it’s available. Hope you a get some help and start feeling better soon. 🥰

Hello. I’m a mental health OT. You’re not a nuisance and the Dr has a role to see patients - be it for their physical or mental health needs. Have a note pad with you with your experiences written down and read this to them to take away some of the fear perhaps. Will help you to remember all you want to say to them also 💫

I had ppd and ppa after my second baby. The HV and Doctor were completely understanding and caring and I didn't feel judged or like I was a waste of time at all. Hope things start to get better soon.
