Solid food

My almost 8-month-old baby isn’t eating well, and I’m feeling a bit stuck. When I try spoon-feeding purées, he barely takes 1–2 spoons, and that’s after a lot of effort. Most of the time, he just shuts his mouth and refuses to open it. If I offer finger foods for baby-led weaning (BLW), he either throws the food or doesn’t pick it up at all. Occasionally, he’ll try to eat something hard, like cucumber, but beyond that, he’s not interested in any food. Developmentally, he’s doing great—crawling, babbling, and hitting all his milestones. We started a combination of BLW and spoon-feeding at 6 months, and I’ve been patient for two months, hoping he’d improve. However, his twin brother eats much better than he does. I know I shouldn’t compare, but it’s hard not to sometimes. Is there anything I can do to encourage him to eat better?

maybe try offering the food before any milk

We do food before milk and make sure she's not crying for food when we do it. It'll take time for him to learn, but focus on the fact that he is eating and learning how.

My baby is the exact same! It’s okay. Normal especially for breastfed babies. It’s really important just for them to explore different textures with their mouths and hands right now. It’ll lead to less pickiness later on. As well as introducing allergens. I got a fruit/milk pacifier to help with chewing and adding fruit. Egg/egg yolks are a great source or iron and vitamin d and a big baby favorite. They get everything they need from milk. Food before 1 is just for fun. Just keep trying and them playing with it and simply tasting things is them doing enough. I also play around with times of day and try the same things multiple days in a row and expose them to all different foods and textures.

I’ve been having the best luck with handing my baby the spoon and then letting him put it into his mouth himself. Sometimes it goes in backwards but at least we try some food. He doesn’t like it if I bring the spoon to his mouth, and does better with the spoon then solids. It’s messy but it’s been working and now he is exploring solids more.

My baby does the opposite, he eats everything but won’t drink his formula anymore it’s such a struggle to get milk in him. But I know he needs to be drinking milk too.

My daughter will be 8 months next week. She has been not waiting food or bottle since she hit 7 months. Just not interested in it
