Following because I could have wrote this myself! Tried him on toast the other night and I was just a terrified wreck the whole time, he was totally fine and absolutely loved his toast so I know it's time to try some more things out
I joined the Facebook group called Weaning the BLW Way and it gave me so much knowledge confidence. Now baby pretty much eats what we eat.
Coughing will happen A LOT and is a good sign. Always have some water handy but don’t panic. My husband panics and it drives me mad but only because I feed him 2/3 meals a day and by the time he’s home from work it’s just the nighttime bottle. Only when they’re silent or blue then there’s a choking issue x
Coughing and gagging are good things, they need to practice it to get better at it. Not gonna lie some things I give her I take off her because she's coughing too much, but you just kind of have to try it so they can start learning all their new skills (coughing and gagging included). I've also found that my LOs skills with picking things up has come on loads too, she's picking up smaller stuff and learning how not to immediately smush soft food when she grips it. I started her on veg that was very soft, steamed broccoli, avocados, steamed courgette. It takes them a while to learn how to hold all this stuff! Also the bigger the better, if it's too small she tends to not chew and just try to swallow it when it's too big.
Honestly, it can be scary at the start. I have been doing a blend of BLW and traditional for the past month and my little one is handling it way better than I am 🙈 she has has spag bol, sausages, mash, etc. Her choking terrifies me, but I had a meeting with myself and decided to crack on. I second, the Facebook group BLW alongside doing a first aid course.
This is something scares me too! I’m going very very very slowly at this! So I’m still blending his food but I am leaning more and more lumps. But at lunch time I’ve started to give for example a pancake in large strips and even melty sticks etc I found quite good for building confidence. The solid starts app is good but I’ll be honest I’m still not confident in for example giving him half a banana! Wonder if I’ll ever be ready lol
