Introducing bottle to EBF baby

We’re starting to introduce a bottle of expressed milk to our 7 week old so that I can leave him with dad for a few hours but I’m really stuck on how to know how much to give him. This morning we offered him 5oz which he gulped down and immediately wanted more, so I put him on the boob and he fed for another 5 mins. Those that give expressed milk, how much do you offer per feed? And how did you figure out how much is a sufficient amount?

Are you using slow flow teats and pace feeding? I ordered the size 0 MAM teats but have seen people on here recommending Dr Browns or the Philips ones as they’re similar to a nipple. Breastfeeding is harder work so they can guzzle when bottle fed. We give ours 6oz and he’ll usually tap out between 5 and 5.5oz. But pop some more in a bottle if they drain it. With pace feeding it’s less likely they’ll eat until they’re sick.

We pace feed with a slow flow lansinoh teat and he has 5oz.

@Charlie we used mam with 0 teat, I don’t really understand what pace feeding is?

I always told to make sure the end of the teat is full of milk to avoid them sucking excess air; but pace feeding seems to be the opposite and I worry about him sucking in too much air

I feel the same way when I read about keeping it horizontal. I tend to ignore that part, but I don’t know if that’s right. We have a gassy grunty baby anyway so I try to avoid potentially making it worse! I do keep pausing the feed though. I guess it’s the same concept as telling adults to eat slowly and at a table so you realise when you’re full and don’t overeat. But that’s my thinking, so may not be factual

As long as the holes in the teat are covered in milk there won't be any air to suck in. The reason to keep the bottle horizontal is so that you can just tip it down and remove milk from the teat when they want to take a natural break, then tip up slightly when they start sucking again
