Its also good to start with something gloopy (like thick oatmeal) which is easier for them to try to scoop themselves
My daughter likes to hold them while she eats cause she sees us do it and wants to do everything we do lol. She does try to use them but mainly still uses her hands.
Yes since he started noticing us using them he wanted them so I got him silicone ones to start with the so plastic ones so he can used to forks now he uses some that are metal and with a rubber/ silicone handle. He manages them pretty well. But when he struggles puts it down and uses his hands
My daughter uses fork/spoon most of the time. When she is having a hard time with a particular food item, she will hand me her fork/spoon and say “help me” so I stab into the food and then she will take it and feed herself.
We started giving him infant utensils and now have toddler ones. Started just letting him putting it in his mouth and exploring. What helped for us is: Putting food on spoon or fork for them Using multiple spoons and forks in a meal so you can help them or model for them. They’ll miss their mouths or drop their food. Eventually they’ll get it!!!
My lil dude uses a fork & spoon sometimes. If it's something he can "stab" he's pretty good at it, otherwise, he will hold the utensil in one hand and hand-feed himself with the other lol we just sat next to him mimicking the use. And at first we'd also put the food on the spoon for him and then let him bring it to his mouth. And it takes time!
