Medical management for miscarriage

I had a scan yesterday at 8wk3days which detected a missed miscarriage about 2 weeks ago. I could wait for another 1-2 weeks to complete the miscarriage naturally but I am taking a long flight next week and don't want it to happen during that time. Has anyone had medical management for completing the miscarriage? Are there any side effects? How many days of rest is needed in this case?

Not had it myself as mine passed naturally but I’ve saw on here that medical management can also fail. If you are taking a long flight next week I’d probably opt for the surgical or vacuum route as that’ll guarantee it’s done but I’m not sure how quickly they can do that xx

I'm so sorry for your loss. I had basically the same thing happen to me, and opted for a D&C. Of course everyone is different, but I'm very happy I took this route. For me, it was relatively quick and painless, and besides needing some rest that day and part of the next (felt tired from relaxation medication I received) I was basically up and moving the next day just fine. Bleeding for the next week (not heavy, like a period), and then everything was complete. I didn't have any cramping or other side effects - of course everyone is different. Wishing you all the best.

Surgical may be best bet to make sure you have everything out. Also helps you heal faster. Since it's been so long they may be able to get you in sooner. I was able to get in same week I'm in a small city. You will still bleed for a few weeks but help you not worry about it happening while flying

I’m sorry for your loss! I had it at the same time as you (8w) I had to wait another 10 days for a scan and was over 11 weeks and my body still hadn’t registered my baby had died so I went for medical management (pills and pessaries) it was simple. Take tablets then insert pessaries after 48 hours, it all basically happened in 2 days and I was bleeding like a period after that period of time! X

@Courtney Davis if I may ask, why did you undergo another scan after 10 days?

So I had a private scan (which is where I found out) then I had the scan at the epu, and they just wanted to make sure as I could’ve been earlier than I thought and it could’ve developed (I knew it wouldn’t though, gut feeling. I was very prepared x

Mine was a blighted ovum so that’s maybe why though x

I had a medical management as I didn't want a procedure that introduces instruments into my womb. It wasn't terrible to be honest. I bled after 6hrs and it was 2 large clots then heavier bleeding (which wasn't very heavy) for a day or so. Then it was really light. Wasn't painful as I had anticipated. I didn't have any side effects eg nausea and diarrhoea as the tablets were inserted behind by cervix (4 tablets inserted by the doctor) x

Sorry for your loss. Just need to be aware that medical management doesn't work for quite a lot of women. I think it's 15-20%. I tried it twice and had to have surgery anyway because nothing much happened. The failed attempts made it a long, drawn out process that went on for weeks. If it happened again id opt for surgery straight away

I did medical management and it was so incredibly painful I’m almost regretting not going with a D&C. Also, I inserted the pills on the on 11/26 and just today 12/6 thinking I’m finally done bleeding.

I did medical management and I actually found the pain fine but there is a lot of blood. The nurse told me everyone reacts differently so it’s difficult to know how you will react. Some people have lots of cramps and not much bleeding, some the opposite, some the bleeding just comes all in one go. It can also make you nauseous but they give you medicine to manage that, I didn’t have an issue with this but again everyone is different. I chose medical management as I wanted to give my body the chance to do it as naturally as possible (natural management was not advised for me) but it has an 85% success rate. Having said that surgery is also still not 100% either and has some risks (although low) that could affect future pregnancies. Bleeding is longer with medical vs surgery and can be up to 3 weeks so I guess if you’re travelling that’s something to bear in mind but in both scenarios it’s worth reviewing whether you still need/want to go as you should mentally process what’s happened
