I would look at every option before removal known a couple of dogs where it didn’t go well. It’s a horrible operation. Have you tried pro-fibre supplements?
@Becky can I ask what you mean by didn’t go well please? Google makes it seem like a very straight forward op..
@Becky yeah we’ve tried profile and adding fibre through food but it’s made no difference, his poo is already very solid so it’s not that. He’s been so uncomfortable for months now
@Claire there is nothing straight forward about it. It makes them incontinent during healing and for some that never recovers. It’s also incredibly uncomfortable for them and because of where it is chances of infection are really high. I spent ages looking into it with my girl but eventually managed to find food at 4% fibre and bulked it out with other food (like veg!). Her anal glands are at an odd angle and she was pooping firm faeces but not a lot of it which was half the issue. We managed to Bulk out her food so there was more going through her and it helped. She has had them flushed a number of times but I wasn’t going to go down the route of removing them because the possible negatives would have a huge effect on her quality of life.
My dads dog has had them removed and all went well- he had horrendous issues before x
I asked about it cos mine had to have hers flushed and kept getting infection prior. They said it cud cause incontinence and its risky. I've added pumpkin powered and Phyllis Husk in her food. Also got her Anal gland support treats. Bulky poo helps squeeze the glands. Its made such a difference. I was told after the flushing she'll have to have them emptied every month. After the 1st month there was barely anything in there. We've not been back since. It's been 4 months now
