Baby led weaning

I’m really struggling with baby led weaning my son is 9 months going on 10 and I have no idea what I’m doing. It’s giving me so much anxiety. I feel like I’m failing him with my lack of education and knowledge about it. He hasn’t had much exposure to it because I don’t know what to offer him. He has a dairy and soy allergy. Would love some tips and advice to lessen my anxiety around this. Thank you

Solid starts and kids eat in colour on Instagram are good resources. Otherwise, try not to stress. Just offer what you are eating cut into age appropriate sizes. Avoid honey before 1 years of age, too much salt and spicy food. Only introduced one common allergen at a time. You have got this!

I feel like I’m over thinking it, like every time I feel like I’m getting the hang of it someone tells me I’m doing it wrong and it knocks my confidence back even more!

Hi. There’s some pretty good dietician led YouTube and IG pages on BLW. I looked in to this a lot. The solid starts app can be helpful too.

Honestly just offer what you are eating. Research how to cut it for his age if you don’t know. I will just google - “how to serve steak to 10 month old” Also, there’s no rule that you have to do baby led weaning. Purées are fine too! Maybe do a mix if you’re worried

Do what works for you! Don’t let others make you anxious. So many people do a mix of baby led weaning and purées. We did! The most important thing is that you’re relaxed around food time and your baby is getting to experience a variety of foods. It doesn’t matter to your baby if you’re doing it ‘right’. I genuinely believe there’s not a right or wrong way in how you offer the food, and lots of parents experience humps along the way with baby not wanting the food offered. You’re doing a great job! If you have time go check out some resources which will help build your confidence. I found the Milk to Meals book and Boob to Food Instagram a helpful resource.

I really like boob to food. I was overwhelmed too, so I made a decision to just buy a book (after a bit of research, but also cutting myself short as there is soooooo much out there) and decided on this one.

I just used the below website to come up with a list of foods to try, keeping it simple just offering him the whole food as it is, prepared by using the solid starts app so I knew the write way to cut it to keep it BLW safe. We started this at 6 months, skipping purées all together. After we had ticked off everything on the list I started looking up simple recipes to combine foods together (I.e: mashed carrots, broccoli and cheese into croquettes, banana, apple and oat bars, simple whole food pasta dishes etc). My boy is now coming up to 3 and is and always has been a fantastic eater and I have received so many compliments and praise about what a good eater he is, so can’t recommend BLW enough. I will be doing the same with baby #2. Good luck! https://www.nhs.uk/start-for-life/baby/weaning/what-to-feed-your-baby/7-to-9-months/
