Bilingual Child and New Recipes

Bilingual Child: My first language is English and I know a little bit of Spanish and French but that doesn't help me much when my fiance's family speaks English and Khmer (they are Asian). I want my son to learn Khmer and I've spoke to them about it throughout my pregnancy but Im not sure what to do now that he's here because his dad doesn't speak it at all. I just want him to have that part of their culture. What do I do? New Recipes: I grew up in a very white household when it comes to foods. (I have an Aunt that thinks pepperoni is too spicy and my mom can't do regular hot sauce on anything). My fiance grew up with some pretty spicy options and other good foods without the spice. I want to learn how to make some of what his mom does but we always get pushed out of the kitchen when we try asking. Is anyone else in the same boat here? Idk what to do.

My children are both half Japanese. My husband speaks it but I also ended up learning it to help my children learn. You can start simple with apps like duolingo and buy kids books for your child. We start with small, simple words and I will say it in both languages when teaching our kids. As for recipes, I just look up videos and recipes online to try. You can also try looking up Facebook groups that share recipes and cooking tips.

I thought of trying Duolingo but they don't have Khmer on there 🤷‍♀️

I totally understand what you mean because my boyfriend and I are very different. I am Hispanic, but I grew up in a white English-speaking family and he is Norwegian so I want my baby girl to know English, Norwegian, but also Spanish because of my culture, but the only thing is, I don’t know Spanish fluently, even though I took five years of it I only know a little bit, but I’ve debated still trying my best to teacher, even if just a few vocab words.

You could Babbel or Ling. I think one of those has Khmer.

Ig @sovanna_mao and @charlescalvino are just two that I follow for food. I’ve looked up lots of stuff on YouTube. You can look up and find some people on both the platforms that at least go over the words in Khmer. I don’t really speak either I only know a couple phrases one of which I learned in adulthood is a swear word but I guess that happens when you anger your parents enough 🤣🤣
