BC Options

So I have an appointment with my OB on the 13th to talk about several things, one of which is me getting birth control. I'm definitely not getting an IUD cuz no thank you lol. The two biggest options I'm looking at are the arm implant and the new-ish OTC birth control (Opill). If anyone has any experience with either of these I would really appreciate it before making the final decision with my OB. Experience while also taking Lexapro/escitalopram would also be appreciated as that's the current medication I'm on and I'm likely going to be getting my dosage upped soon as well. TIA!! <3

I’m sorry, do not to the arm implant. So many women have such horrible issues with it. Myself included. I got my period every other week for 7 weeks. I felt horrible in it. Additionally many women are coming forward with brain tumors who’ve used the nexplanon. The depo shot is currently being sued for brain tumors and ppl are saying nexplanon is next. Not to scare monger but just consider your options and do your research!

@Pamela Noelle this is what I've heard pretty frequently which is why I've started to consider the OTC birth control instead but I haven't seen many people talking about their experience with it

@Salem yes! So from personal experience… it’s horrible. As for the OTC I haven’t used it but it’s not as effective I’ve heard. I have PCOS and I’m currently on the mini pill which has been horrible.. my mental health took a toll. I’m 3 months post partum and I’m usually on the Junel which is my favorite!! Of all the birth controls.

@Pamela Noelle what kind of birth control is the Junel? I'm currently breastfeeding and plan to do so for at least another 7 ish months so I can't have any birth control with estrogen as I've been told it seriously messes with supply. Also I've heard the OTC is only 1% less effective (making it 98% effective) when used properly

@Salem that’s why I’m on the mini pill to not kill my supply, but it died on its own…. Sigh. But Junel does have estrogen. It’s generic loestrin.

@Pamela Noelle ah okay. If anything I might just not do birth control and keep dealing with the periods for now since pregnancy isn't a huge concern as my fiance and I won't be doing anything for a while for more personal reasons 😅

i had the Nexplanon arm implant when i was a teenager. back then i didn’t care but i’d never get it again. i had extremely long and heavy periods for 6 months, then no period at all for over 2 years. i’m sure some women would enjoy not having a period but i don’t want my body’s natural cycle impacted like that again. i didn’t have any other negative side effects really, but when i had it removed my mind felt more clear ? it’s hard to describe but i never want hormonal BC again. and the IUD is a noooo for me

I work with the Nexplanon a lot and find people love it or hate it. I have heard of it impacting peoples mental health both positively and negatively. It’s one of those things that you don’t know until you try it. I take pills similar to the opill and have spotting a lot. I picked it because I prefer pills and I’m still happy with it.

The depo shot affected me so horribly after just one dosage. 10/10 don’t recommend.

With anything hormone based you’re taking a risk as it could have a horrible reaction, and especially with the implant or injection then takes a while to get out of your system. Why are you anti-coil? Just out of interest? It’s a little painful having it inserted but then you’ve got 5-10 years of hassle free, hormone free birth control, and don’t have to remember to take a pill either!

@Jen I don't want to get the IUD because I have a lot of trauma with my lower area I just don't personally think I could mentally handle having someone digging around in there for the insertion. Plus I've heard so many bad stories about how painful it can be.
