Hey! We are doing hybrid of blw and homemade purées/mashed food. I have some finger foods and then will usually feed him a couple bites from spoon of puree then hand him spoon:) my baby also loves using a silicone feeder to try fruits! We used the silicone feeder before finger foods and it taught him how to bring the food to his moutg on his own:) I suggest the haakaa silicone feeder!
I don’t know if what I’m doing is blw.. but since about 5 1/2 months to now (almost 7 months) I’ve been giving baby what I’m eating as a taste so she’s explored and tried everything I’ve ate, just a little bit on my finger and she tastes things that way. Now at 6 months I give her a strip of steak (when we eat it) and use the mesh food containers and put whatever dinner I made in there. I also got this baby food masher thingy at Walmart and will start mushing food for her (just a little bit) as we’re still figuring out what she likes lol. But honestly her current fav is strawberry’s in the mesh thing. She’ll devourrrr them in minutes now haha and yogurt. But honestly we’ve had the best luck with her watching me eat something on my hip and then I offer her what I’ve been eating
Thanks for the feedback! I will take your suggestions ☺️
Don't get dejected after a week of trying. It can take months for kids to take to food. Some longer than a year. Just keep offering a healthy and appropriately prepared variety of foods. Make mealtimes fun and don't force it. Let them play and discover. It isn't going to be perfect right from the go, and like with sleep, it will go backwards (my 1 year old went from being a terrific eater to throwing most of her food on the floor 🤣). You just have to take it as it comes. When they're ready, they'll let you know!
One week in the business also! He pulls the funniest disgust faces and basically creates a mess while gagging a lot. But I think it’s part of the process. I’ve heard that they have to try something 7 times to be able to like it. Think that from 6m to 1y is a period to learn how to eat, but solids are not their main source of nutrients, so it matters that they practice, not how much food gets into their mouths.
I do solid starts. Rejection as they learn is normal. We are just comfortable that it is mostly a waste of food the first couple weeks, but as they get more familiar with the process, it gets better. Started the week they turned 6 mo for both. My oldest took to it better. But my youngest not so much but is getting better since we are a month in. You got this!
Has your LO shown interest in eating your food? I tried to place mine in his high chair and show him things. I tried baby rice and he hated that. I then left it a week and tried banana porridge and he liked that. Then when I went back to the porridge the next day he had no interest. I then tried veg on another day and started with sweet potato and he liked that. But the next day he didn't. Funny buggers. I gave up with single vegetables after a few days but then when it came to combinations he preferred that. I think it all just takes time. If anything, your LO might like melty puffs. I try not to use them a lot but I know mine sticks his fist in his mouth a lot through teething and it really helped him soothe plus it introduced a way of telling him "if I chew this, this is a nice flavour". I also do it with a slice of apple now. Mashed banana has also been a bit. They tend to like fruit.
