Introducing formula to EBF baby…

My LO is very nearly 6 months old and I’m looking to introduce some formula now and then - Mainly because I struggle with finding the time to pump inbetween her constant feeding. However, I have absolutely no idea where to start 🤣 Advice please?! Should I get a follow on milk as she’s 6 months old now? How many ounces should I offer her? If anyone can give me some guidance I’d be really appreciative!! When it comes to formula I have absolutely no idea what I’m doing 😂

Hey Erin, so I just transitioned my little one. We had a massive bottle refusal moment too before our success! Here are what worked for us: lansinoh teats and Kendamil ready make formula as an introduction before powdered. For some reason he hates the powdered formula to start with but didn’t mind the ready made. In term of ounces he started with 90-120ml and as often as breastfeeding and we slowly build up to what he’s supposed to have for is age and spaced out the feed too. NHS doesn’t “recommend” the follow on milk so we’re staying with the first infant milk. Obviously brand are your personal preference xx Hope this helps!

@Manon That’s all really helpful thank you so much!!! My girl took so long to accept a bottle so I’m expecting some refusal to begin with when she realises it’s not my milk🥲😂 When you say about follow on milk not being recommended, do you mean it’s not recommended at all? I should stick with the first infant milk indefinitely? Xx

@Erin the lansinoh is the only one he really accepts and I guess is the closest to the breast! When he went through the proper refusal and big cries I just stopped for a few days so he would “forget” and tried again, cause doing everyday like recommended made it worst for us for some reason … I read that they say for the first 12months the first infant milk is enough. But obviously I’m not an expert so maybe check with your Health visitor team xx

You don’t have to buy follow on milk at all - essentially it only exists to enable formula companies to advertise because they’re not allowed to advertise first infant milk. In terms of ounces, have a look at the side of the tin at what’s recommended for her age and weight and go from there. I combi feed and it’s not an exact science, sometimes he doesn’t finish the bottle presumably because he’s had enough from breast milk earlier but we just go with it x

I just introduced formula to my 5 month old we do his last feed of the night with formula and breast milk the rest of the time. Follow on milk is only from 1 years old. Follow the instructions on the tin we use cow and gate and it’s 7 scoops 7 ounces for his weight and age (guide on the box) and he usually leaves an ounce or 2 we pace feed and he stops when he’s had enough

@Anna Wow I had no idea that was the case!! Thank you though that’s all super helpful advice xx

@Kimberley Thank you so much x
