I give finger foods of the same item and give baby the spoon of food. Because my 1st was prominently pureed and he needed to be fed, he now feeds himself but is such a slow eater
I started with very smooth and runny purées and slowly made it thicker and chunkier. I’ve just fallowed my baby. After that I tired to give her an actual piece of broccoli and she did really well, only gagged once.
Both.. I was too scared to do BLW at first so eased myself in gently and now I’m happy doing it but he doesn’t swallow enough doing BLW and he’s a very hungry baby so we do a mix of BLW and puree for each meal and he’s getting better everyday with his bigger foods x
I'm purely blw. I let my baby feed herself. I don't believe in forcing her to eat, if she's not capable of doing it herself then she's not ready to be eating solids. The most I do if hold the spoon or piece of food for her to take from me. But she's getting much better at picking it up herself now. She's not eating much quantity wise right now, but she's very much enjoying learning about food and developing her fine motor skills in the process.
Both. Purées so he can learn to swallow and get used to digesting food, BLW so he can get used to chewing (he doesn’t really swallow with BLW unless it’s something that dissolves into mush in his mouth).
Both. He happily takes purées and he is hungry. It is easier to give him the quantity he asks for (more than I thought) with a spoon. when I try to give him solids to eat on his own to learn, he is very engaged with the playful side of it, but after a while cries because the whole process is too slow.
I did BLW with my firstborn and although I found it a bit stressful at times, I loved how quickly he became independent with eating and the huge variety of foods that he would eat. It was also easier because for the most part, he just ate what we were eating. I’d leave out salt etc until I’d dished his up and then add it to the adult meal. Plus I had read that babies don’t learn anything about eating from purees as they use the sucking reflex to get it from the spoon which is the same skill they use for drinking milk and since milk is their primary course of nutrients until they are 1, I wasn’t too concerned with how much my son was eating during BLW. I’m also going to do BLW with my June baby and I can’t wait, I’m so excited to see him learn. I found the Solid Starts app very useful and took away a lot of my fear as it tells you how to cut and prepare different foods etc to prevent the risk of choking.
We're doing both, so she can get used to different textures but also by spoon feeding her some she's able to get used to swallowing more food. Also the flexibility feels easier, we can decide what she has depending on what we have.
