Accidentally gave baby biscuit with honey

I let my 5month old suck a biscuit I was eating not realising it had honey in, he did pull off a small bit and ate it 😩

Don’t stress mama , I accidentally gave my LO chocolate from my doughnut without realising I was doing it . It happens promise x

I also gave my LO chocolate 🙈 He became a little hyperactive for a couple of hours and then crashed 🤣😳

Honey is toxic to babies under 12 months though so not the same as chocolate 😩 I’ve called docs and there’s been no cases of botulism in the UK with honey from here which is what he had so should be fine. Honey from Turkey or Nepal is another story!

I’m sure it was only a tiny bit so he’ll likely be fine. A friend of mine didn’t know not to give honey to babies so she was putting it on his porridge every day for breakfast for weeks before I told her, he was absolutely fine! So I’m sure the tiny bit you’ve given your little one as a one off will be fine

@N 💞 good to know thank you! x

Botulism from honey is very rare as most things made with honey has been cooked, like a biscuit. It’s more than their stomachs can struggle if they ingest it raw as they haven’t built the gut bacteria to cope with it. But in a biscuit it’s okay (as it’s been treated and prepared) don’t stress too much xxx

It's not the honey itself that's toxic. As you said, botulism is the problem. Adult botulism is different from infant botulism. Adults get sick from the toxins produced by Clostridium botulinum, but we have protective factors against the spores themselves. Babies have no protection from the bacteria, thus can get sick even from being exposed to the bacterium itself. That said, it's an incredibly rare scenario. The advice is to avoid honey under 1 just to be on the safe side, but a minimal accidental exposure to a bit of honey cooked into a biscuit is highly, highly unlikely to cause problems. Just continue being vigilant and don't worry about it. 💜

Honey is not toxic. There is a small risk of botulism which would be very detrimental to a baby under 1. The risk doesn't magically disappear when they turn 1, it's just that a 1 year old would cope with a serious illness better. The risk is absolutely miniscule A biscuit has been cooked anyway so the risk is no more than a biscuit without honey in.

@Charley it’s the spores in the honey. Baking or cooking doesn’t kill them. But yes I have been told now that it’s fine as the honey used was from the UK which isn’t a problem 😊

don’t worry i’m sure he’ll be fine
