Do we pay childminders annual leave?

My little girl is starting with a childminder in the New Year. We will have access to 15 hours free government funding for 38 weeks of the year, term time only. They charge for 52 weeks of the year so we will need to pay an additional £96 per month to cover the remaining weeks. I’ve got my childminders paperwork here and she’s listed her annual leave dates, there are five weeks in total over next year 2025, in August for example she is away for half of the month but it seems we still have to pay the £96 for the month of August. Is this right that we pay for the full month, even though our children won’t be looked after for the full month? I thought to ask on here before I questioned it with her.

Yeah usually how it works… same with nurseries! We get paid for our holidays, so do they!

You’re essentially paying for their placement rather than the hours of care, so yep! Painful 🫣 I pay 850 ish per month WITH the free 15 hours. That’s 4 days per week. Ofc we pay if he’s in or not. The only time we don’t pay is if the nursery has to shut for maintenance or training

Mine only charge £5 a day instead of £55 for their leave

Ah ok so it’s normal then, just seemed abit weird paying a full month when they won’t even be there … but I suppose they need an income during annual leave like you would if you were an employee of a company?

It really depends on how they structure the fees. It is common though that you don’t the same set monthly fees regardless of closures/sickness. This is how a nursery would work. However childminders could use more discretion but many follow a nursery/business model by which you are holding/paying for their place year round. So regardless of holidays, back holidays, your holidays or sick you’d pay the same. We are quite fortunate that our childminder doesn’t charge us for holiday weeks or bank holidays but think this is more rare. She doesn’t however do the free hours.

I’m very fortunate in that my wonderful Childminder doesn’t charge when she’s away and she accepts funded hours. I know this isn’t the norm though sadly
