iPad games and resources

Hello all my son will be 3 in a week and he is mostly non verbal besides for random words but he does not communicate verbally. We just had our 3 year special needs evaluation and they are going to start using an iPad as a form of communication. So for his birthday I decided I was going to get him a tablet. Now I have a pretty strict no screen time rule. He only gets 30 min of his choice of tv and then he gets up to an hour of just me and him working on ABC mouse together. My question is what apps/shows have you found helpful for using as a speech aid or just using as an educational resource rather than just entertainment.

My daughter is nearly 4 and only just started to use words, we use Super Simple Songs and have found her speech has come along massively as she is a Gestalt Learning Processor and the repetition and easy use app has been great for picking phrases up

@Mya my son is also a Gestalt learning processor. We listen to their music but I had no idea they had an app. Thank you!!

Another suggestion is Yakka Dee, it’s a British BBC show but has low stimulation and no background music or sounds and just focuses on individual simple words and speech sounds 😊

@Mya love that we are always looking for new low stimulation shows! Thanks again ❤️

I recommend getting a tablet from Amazon. If you get an Amazon Kids tablet it comes in a case already and with a year of Amazon kids plus subscription which allows you to set limits and content. You set an age range for it to provide apps, books, videos in the appropriate age group. You can also block content and can add permission for apps as well. You can set where has to do so much time in educational content before can do entertainment content as well.

@Kristen I got him an Amazon tablet they are having a great deal on them. I saw it came with a case and I got a screen protector. I did see that it said something about a free 3 month subscription to Amazon kids. I had not heard of that but I love that! That makes me feel a lot better. I was so hesitant because my step kids are older and their mom lets them do YouTube I have their accounts at our house locked down but even then I still was seeing bad things so I finally said enough and got rid of it.

@Nikkole yes Amazon kids is amazing. Gives you so much control over their content. And even after the promotional time is over the monthly subscription isn't that bad of a cost. I feel you on YouTube. I have a love hate relationship with it. I love it for music and figuring out how to do things but I hate it for the kids. I also have found that unless it's a YouTube kids account all the "parental controls" on a regular account are worthless. And there is even stuff on YouTube kids I'm not a fan of mostly cuz it's annoying or sometimes.
