Cmpa / lactose intolerance

Hi first time mum here with a 12 week old. We have been prescribed this formula after aptamil pepti 1 didn’t improve my little girls poops. Paediatrician reckons she is reacting to the lactose. So we got this milk yesterday. How long did people start to see an improvement? Also why does it have to be made with room temperature water? Thank you in advance 🙂

That's not a lactose-free formula. It's another hydrolysed formula like Pepti. Both contain dairy and thus lactose since it's not specifically lactose-free. Difference between the two is that Pepti contains whey protein and Nutramigen contains casein protein. The proteins are extensively broken down in these formulas to help CMPA babies digest the milk better. If neither of these help, then the next step would be an amino-acid formula, which is completely dairy-free. Lactose intolerance is an intolerance to the sugars in milk rather than an allergic reaction to the proteins. While not impossible, it's extremely rare in babies. However, you would need a lactose-free formula rather than a CMPA formula. You can get lactose-free formula in just about any big supermarket. Some of the hypoallergenic formulas are made with lukewarm or cooled boiled water as freshly boiled water would kill some of the nutrients or probiotics in those particular formulas.

How long was she on Pepti for? It can take 4-6 minimum to see full improvement, though some improvement is generally noticeable after 2-3 weeks

@Lisette hey the paediatrician said this is a lactose free formula? And Google also says it is too? I’ll see how she goes with this one as been told no improvement in 4-5 days then we’ll be trialing a different formula. Ahh ok thank you that makes sense then as to why it’s made up that way. Thank you :)

@Lisette only a week but she got worse on it so they changed her milk to that one above x

The only formulas that are truly lactose free are the non dairy ones. It’s the same way that lactose free milk is not 100% lactose free as it’s still dairy. It states on the nutramigen website that it’s only for mild to moderate allergies.

@Tino ah ok. Il see how she gets on and if she hasn’t improved I have to take her back in 4-5 days

My little guy is on this milk, there isn’t any lactose in it, he was specifically prescribed this by the dietician because it’s lactose free whereas Aptamil pepti still contains lactose x

@Shenel that’s what I was told yesterday it was a lactose free formula. How is your little one doing on this milk? X

Learn something new every day. That's good to know, thank you. However, if she does well on this formula then I would still be careful when weaning as this formula is both for the management of CMPA as well as lactose intolerance. What I mean to say is, if this formula agrees with her, you still won't know if she has CMPA or if she's lactose intolerant. Because it's possible to only be allergic to one of the proteins but be fine with the other. So, she could react to the whey in Pepti but be fine with the casein in Nutramigen as opposed to being intolerant to lactose.
