Milk when weaning

We started weaning my son about 4 weeks ago. He took to it really quickly and soon started refusing milk as he just seemed to want solids. This means we’ve ramped up to 3 meals a day quite quickly and his milk quantity has dropped off. He’s on formula and has dropped to about 500ml a day (he was having 1000). Is anyone else in the same boat and is this okay or should he be having more milk at this age? I try to make sure he’s getting lots of healthy ingredients and a balanced diet plus reintroduced vitamin drops but didn’t know if milk was still important at this age. Thanks

“Food before 1 is just for fun” Milk should still be the primary source of nutrition for babies especially during early weaning. I’m not sure what your feeding schedule is like but i would give solids an hour and half after milk, so that way theres a gap but not so long of a gap that they fill up on solids and not milk. They shouldn’t really be on 3 meals a day until like 8 months ish. From 6 months its 1 meal a day, 7 months 2 meals, 8 months 3 meals, following this you add snacks etc but still milk xx

I’m in the same boat, not ramping up to 3 meals but it feels he would take them. I know the theory says otherwise. But not all babies are the same either. I need to ask to the health visitor

Yeh it’s really tricky. I try to give him his milk an hour before food but he just refuses it for the full hour until the solids appear. I’ve been using his milk to make porridge and adding to mashes too 🤷🏻‍♀️ he will drink after his meal but it definitely feels his priority is the food and milk tops him up. You’re right I’ll ring the HV and just check x

This food before 1 is just for fun thing pisses me off ngl, just let the kids eat what they wanna eat. Mine has 3 meals a day and 2 snacks and he has 24oz (around 680ml). If they want the milk they will drink the milk if they want the food they will eat the food. Unless your child is underweight or struggling to gain weight just let them do what they want x

Since we started weaning my girl would only want to eat solids and no milk during the day. She drinks the usual amount at night or before bed, but doesn’t want to drink during the day and it’s kind of stressing me out too. I now skip solids on some days purposely just so that she is really hungry and would give in to the milk. 🙈🤦🏻‍♀️ I kind of regretted starting solids early haha. Only because I’m not quite ready yet to start cooking for her as well or I don’t really know what to prep other than some steamed fruits and veg 😊

I also don't massively agree with the food before 1 is for fun. It's not like when they turn 1 they'll suddenly be able to eat and not want milk if you've been prioritising milk. The NHS also doesn't say this phrase anymore. At some point the balance tips in favour of food so sounds like your baby has done this early and that's totally fine. I think you need to start giving vitamin drops when milk drops below 400 ml. You're doing a great job! My 6mo has zero interest in food and that's totally fine too. My eldest was on 3 meals by 7months.

@Sophie I wasn’t aware the NHS was no longer saying this? My Paediatrician literally said it to me 3 days ago. I think everyone can do whatever they like with their baby but she asked an opinion and I gave her mine. I understand what you’re trying to say but what a baby’s stomach can handle at 6/7 months is very different to what it can tolerate at 12 months.
