Bottle feeding..

Sounds stupid.. 7.5 months in but how do you make up formula? Everything I’ve seen online is different to what it says on the tin? My lg has been exclusively breastfeed until now but want to get her used to having formula before my return to work. So I have few questions about formula feeding… Can I sterilise the bottles and put them in the cupboard or do they need to be done fresh before every feed? How are you actually making it up… any other utensils? boiling water, cooled? The tin says boil and leave to cool to 70°c, how am I ment to know when that is?😂 are you buying thermometers for milk? Im overthinking it I know but I just like to know what you do, & what milk you use x

You can sterilise bottles and they are usually sterile for 24 hours then you may need to sterilise them again... I only use mam bottles so can only speak for them. Prep machine has been a god send. Some people I know do a hot shot of 2 oz then put the powder in to dissolve and kill the bacteria then fill with filter water so it's the perfect temp. Or you can fill up to how ever many oz you need with boiling water then stick in a jug of cold water for it to come down to perfect temp

Just as an aside, you've got this far without using bottles, I wouldn't introduce them now when it's reccomended to get rid of them at 12 months! Use a straw cup or sippy cup xx

I sterilize and make up his 4 bottles for the next day in the evening and then in the day just warm up in a jug of hot water. Boil water let cook for 20-30 mins add to bottles and powder and shake. If we are out I do hot shot so half boiling water or of a flask add formula swirl then add cooled boiled water to make up the volume

Sterilised bottles are fine for 24 hours so sterlise all at once. The formula itself needs sterling so a lot of people do a 'hot shot' which is depending on the amount a small amount of hot water - shake it up and then a lot of people will top up with cooled boiled water to make the right temp Test the temp on your wrist if it's too hot you will know. Instructions for perfect making up of formula are let's be honest unsustainable as you have to make it and let it cool at which point you have a screaming child. The method above works great too as you can have a flask of hot and cold when you go out and pre portioned formula so you just pop the formula in bottle add the hot shake it add the cool and mix it up

@Flo just jumping on this if you stand bottles in warm water make sure it's not mam bottles as they pull the water up into the bottle and you are not using sterlie water then

Not using mam don't worry!

@Flo I assumed not just an FYI for others really

I boil at least 1 litre of fresh tap water in the kettle. I then set a timer for 20 mins on my phone and make the bottle then. As long as you have at least 1 litre of water in the kettle and you use it within 30 mins to make the bottle it should be at a high enough temp 😊 I just set a 20 minute timer so I have a wee 10 mins to make it in case I’m in the middle of something! Once I’ve made it I cool it down in a jug of cold water so that it’s ready to use when I need it, usually sit it in the jug for about 10 mins and check a wee bit on my wrist to make sure it’s not too hot. I used to have mam bottles that I couldn’t do this with as they seem to take in water from the jug but now I use lansinoh bottles so don’t have that issue anymore 😊 The bottle lasts 2 hours at room temp from the time of making it so if you know roughly when your wee one is needing fed you can make it ahead of time (I’ve got one sitting just now that I made 10 mins ago as he’s usually fed around 3.30-4pm).

Once your wee one has started drinking from it then it needs to be used within 1 hour. If I’m going out for a while I usually just use the ready to use cartons/bottles of formula 😊 And as above I sterilise my bottles each night and they last 24 hours, although I’m not sure if that depends on the steriliser that you use? If they’ve gone over that time I just sterilise again. Hope this helps and sorry for my essay / any repeated info 😂

What I've been doing is filling a jug of boiling water in the morning and then putting it in the fridge and then when it comes to making a bottle I use 3oz of boiling water to make the formula and then put in 4oz of water from the fridge to make a 7oz bottle

I keep a jug of tap water in the fridge so it's cold. I boil the kettle when LO wants a feed and pour 50% boiling in, shake, top up remaining 50% with the cold from the fridge - makes the perfect drinking temp & way quicker than waiting for things to cool or heat up X
