LOW IRON.

I took my LO to her 1 year appointment & her iron was slightly low, not by much. But I kind of expected it since she won’t eat eggs, oatmeal, spinach basically all the iron foods. Any moms have any recipes where I can hide any of these foods in without the baby noticing. Thank you.

We just learned the same thing at our 12 month appt. I'm planning on mixing ground beef into mashed potatoes (since she loves those), and doing lots of fortified cereal. Ours has recently become more selective around veggies too, but one of my friends serves her kids lots of pesto pasta and blends spinach into the pesto for a veggie boost. She calls it "Hulk pasta" since it turns bright green and her boys love it! So def going to try that.

How they did know about iron levels? We didn't have any blood work done .

@Natalia For ours they did a finger prick, and when that came back low iron they sent us down to do a blood draw to confirm and get a more accurate number. Those results were still low but not as low as the initial result, which means we can try getting more iron rich food into her diet for the next few months and then they will test again at the 15 month appt. If the second result had been as low as it was with the finger prick they would have prescribed an iron supplement as well.

Interesting, we've never had that done. Was it because your pediatrician suspected your baby had low iron? @Becca

I do baby oatmeal and blueberry pancakes every morning to help with the iron!! 1/2 cup baby oatmeal, 1/2cup pancake mix, 4oz baby food 4oz water & then blueberries! You gotta cook it on medium heat, low & slow!

@Natalia I think it was standard for our 12 month. They tested for iron and lead with the finger prick

Shepards pie is another good recipe that my son loves. & refried beans with ground beef mixed in!!

@Natalia it was standard at our office for the finger poke. @Jennifer thank you so much, Shepherd pie is a good one ! & I love it also.

I would blend apples with spinach. She will never know. Also vitimin c helps absorbs iron.
