Labour pains

Hi everyone. Any words of wisdom welcome. I'm currently in labour. Contractions feel pretty unbearable - unable to talk or do anything else. Paracetamol really isn't touching sides. I was using the TENS machine which wasn't really helping anyway, but took it off with hopes for sleeping, which is clearly not happening. Contractions are about 50 seconds long and come every 3-4 mins. I went to the MAU pretty much in the same state earlier and they found my cervix is barely dilated at all - can't even access baby's head. They sent me home and advised to return when contractions are more painful and consistent. I feel at a loss now as that's what they feel like. Any advice?

Go back and ask to be admitted and given pain meds. They can also check if the cervix has progressed. I was 1cm (and 'not in labour') at 1am on Friday and had a baby before 3am...v unlikely but explained my pain!

Hi Emma, if you are finding the contractions very painful I would get in contact with the MAU and ask to come in to get some stronger pain relief. Good luck with everything!

Good luck, try to get admitted and make it clear pain unbearable and ask for stronger pain management i.e. gas air or something asap

Definitely go back if you need extra pain relief. I found breathing helped a lot though, don't know if you've done any hypnobirthing research but breathing in through your nose for 4 and out through pursed lips for 9 during a contraction really helped me, only did a few of those and it was over, also helped me stay relaxed and I dilated really quickly then! Good luck if you're still going! X

Try mix up the positions, all fours, squatting down, on the back, on the side, leaning over a ball. You might stumble across a far less painful contraction position. Taking a nice warm shower or bath is also helpful for pain relief. I would go back into hospital though. With every contraction you’re dialating, and they would be very cruel to send you home a second time if you’re in that much pain. I imagine you’ll be much closer to your goal by now though. Usually when you get to the can’t talk, in agony stage, you’re getting close to the final throws. Good luck x

Doing breathing exercises definitely helped me through mine! Take deep breaths and imagine you are exhaling out the contraction in a downwards direction and I also tried a hair comb during labour for pressure point relief on my palm!

Thanks everyone!! My waters broke shortly after the post so I went back, had some codeine and was eventually admitted, then had some diamorphine which allowed me to have some rest and before I knew it I was fully dilated! Our beautiful baby boy was born at 9:53am today!! We're so delighted 🥰
