Sleep!

My little boy has just turned 3 and is a nightmare with sleep. We put him to bed at 8pm and if he’s really tired and hasn’t had a nap he will go straight to sleep but is then up around 3am. Most of the time he won’t go back to sleep but sometimes he’s awake for a few hours then goes back to sleep. If he’s had a nap that day we still put him in bed at 8pm but he can be jumping around his bed until 10/11pm. I don’t feel like he’s completely ready to drop his nap yet as when he doesn’t nap he’s really starts to flag around 5pm and I really have to keep him awake. We have just started to go through an Autism assessment for him too as he is very behind with his speech and is showing other signs. I have no idea if this is normal or just a phase. We also have a 5 week old baby. I have seen drops that I can put in a drink before bed that might help but wonder if anyone can recommend anything. Any tips/advice or experience would be very much appreciated!

Wow you’ve just described my 3 year old boy! Without sounding horrible it’s refreshing to read someone else is in the same boat! 🙈 my boy is currently being assessed for autism aswell so I’m wondering if that’s a link? I’ve spoken to people with kids who have ASD and sleep issues is common with kids who have it! I also have a 4 month old baby who is going through sleep regression/teething etc. so it’s tough! I’ve tried bedtime drops but I didn’t notice much difference tbh, so stopped them! But everyone’s different so they may work for you!

Our little boy doesn't nap anymore and he still wakes during the early hours but providing I take him into our spare room and stay with him, he will go back to sleep. Last night was the first night in about two months that he actually slept alone all night. It's exhausting but seems to be a phase a lot of them are going through.

Maybe if there no nap 8pm is too late and he’s overtired resulting in the 3am wake up, what time does he get up in the morning xx

@Amy if he goes to bed earlier he is awake even earlier! On a night when he sleeps at 10/11pm he wakes about 8am but on the days he’s in nursery he has to be up at 7am x

If he’s up at 7am for nursery put to bed at 6 x

Try bringing bed forward to 7 if he’s to be up for 7 generally whatever time my we girl goes to bed is the time she’ll be up in the morning

My girl has potential adhd and her sleep is horrendous. Working with a sleep coach, it might sound contradicting, but she had us gradually move her bedtime earlier, to 6pm. It used to be 7.30.. So for week one, we gradually went down 5mims each night til we got to 7pm. Then gradually down down down until eventually we got to 6pm. Once at 6pm, we had to continue doing 6pm for ateast 1 month. Onkt after that, about 2 weeks time, we're we better able to access if it really worked as it takes a while to kick in.. Now she sleeps sooooooo much better! And she still kcassionally has naps. Sleep coach says min 45mins per day, no later than 2pm. Even if she doesn't nap, we are sure to out her in her quiet, dark room for min 34mins to relax before she is aloud to come out. Try it. Really worked for us!!
