Child wanting me to repeat what they’ve said

My 3.5y/o has started asking us to repeat what she’s said or certain words from the conversation e.g. “I played with Ethan at pre school today” followed by “can you say Ethan?” when we then repeat it back she just say yes and carries on. Sometimes it just a key word or other times the whole sentence. I don’t if it’s a way of checking we’re listening or making sure we’ve understood her but I’m confused why she’s started doing it. Does any other little ones do this?

It’s possible the preschool will be doing that whilst speaking. Like my little boy who is the same age will ask me to answer yes no, or will ask me to identify things based on letters. It’s what the educator is doing, they will say a word in a sentence that may be hard to phonically say and ask them to repeat it. She’s just learning from that. You should do the same back

@Iona hmm possibly a pre school habit she’s learnt. She has amazing vocabulary and has been very good at communicating and talking from a young age so just seemed odd that now she starts! Will chat to her key worker and see if it’s a thing they do ☺️

It will be, I’d imagine. I know my LB nursery do it a lot. He loves numbers and alphabet, due to my situation he was delayed in speaking as he wasn’t around his peers much until he started nursery full time in August but you can’t even tell now that he wasn’t speaking properly beforehand. “Can you show me”, “can you tell me”, and repeating back will all be part of their routine to teach the children words and word association

My little boy has started doing this, he’s very much into being a ‘copycat’ at the minute thanks to bluey😂 so i never thought anything of it to be honest, i just thought it was funny and he was copying what we do with him sometimes😂
