Shallow latch??

HELP!! Im pretty sure my baby has a shallow latch. We have to use a nipple shield to nurse bc I have flat nipples, but my nips are sooo sore and damaged. I thought using a nipple shield prevented pain? The first 20 seconds or so of feeding hurts SO bad I mean screaming kicking pain. Does this sound like a shallow latch? How do I fix it?

I had the same problem and was definitely a shallow latch… piece of my nipple came off!! Baby had a tongue and lio tie when born as well. We got it clipped but he had taken to the bottle. Finally got him back almost 2 months later, but neither one of us knew how to properly do this… I tried learning through videos etc, but only resolved once I scheduled with a lactation consultant. They just simply know best and are able to physically guide you. They will ask if they can touch you and baby, and I recommend saying yes. It makes a big difference!

@Aline im planning on seeing one on Monday but im hoping to find some help to survive until then 😭

I had some bad nipples, literally the lactation and pediatrician said it’s some of the worst they have seen, what helped the most was pumping a bit before to make my nipples longer and it help him latch better and I don’t have that problem now
