I gave my son solids and did baby led weaning from 6 months and he never choked. In the UK it’s recommended you start weaning to solids at 6 months. Is there a reason why she said wait until 1? Any underlying conditions?
@Lottie she gave me shit for giving her avocados and shredded cheese 😵💫 and ive been looking at guide lines but she was upset and said that no finger food should be given until she’s a year old :/// only cereals and puree but not the purée with little chunks in it ;-; even tho says 7-8 months on it
@Isabelle nope ! She just said babies can choke before 1 and it’s not safe to start before that
That's really bad advice! I'd be looking into seeing a new pediatrician. My daughter was confidently eating chicken drumsticks by 9 months, and we did BLW from 6 months so she ate all kinds of things. Even people I know who did purees used chunky ones and introduced textures from 8-9 months onwards. You can end up with a child with an aversion to textures by not introducing them young! Choking is a risk at any age (including adults) with any feeding method. Introducing babies young to a variety of textures and building up their skills at chewing and swallowing food helps protect against choking.
@Mikaela my daughter was born in April we only found a ped in October !!! So im scared to switch pedietrician because it took us forever to find one it’s really hard where I live to have one :(( they don’t give you one anymore
Babies start LED weaning before one my baby has been eating table foos since before 6 months honestly though because he was ready himself i always watched him and made sure he was safe but they’re at risk of choking at any age truly im cpr and first aid certified so Ik wat to do in case mine was choke on anything but u can watch videos on it also to learn more about wat it looks like and how to help them just do wat u feel is best for you
They are wrong. Choking is possible at any age. Even adults can choke. Younger Babies have a bit of a strong gagging reflex, but it is to protect them from choking.
They are more than wrong. They need to give their degree up lol. You could have started at 6 months. My son’s doctor gave me the okay at 4 months because he was extremely well fed, so I made some fruit biscuits. It just needs to be things that you can easily mash In between two fingers.
That’s odd , definitely should be eating before 1
She’s definitely wrong. It’s actually good for them to have that chewing lotion earlier. They even suggest having those cereal puffs earlier than that and those aren’t good for baby! Give them real food and make sure it’s a good size. We’re giving my 5 month old little chunks of avocado and banana. We tried egg and he wasn’t a fan😂 we even let him chew on a big piece of steak. With stuff like the steak making it too big for them to bite a piece of and swallow is key. They can suck the nutrients out without risk of choking
I also used to work in a daycare and i had a baby that even choked on the babyfood plain liquid baby food he just truly had to get used to it and he was over 6 months old
So it doesn’t matter what they eat their at risk of choking but that doesn’t mean stop them completely from eating heck adults choke on drink all the time
I have never heard any one say that let alone a pedi lol.
@Amanda Brown all these comments makes me think she’s delusional 😵💫😵💫😵💫

Pediatricians definitely are not feeding experts nor should they be pretending to be! Babies can choke on purées too - anyone can choke on anything! It’s actually good to introduce solid foods between 6-12 months because that’s when their gag reflex is most sensitive. That’s a good thing when they’re first learning to eat and learning the boundaries of their mouths. Solid Starts is a great resource and they have lots of qualified professionals on their team if you look on their website.
I don’t know the advice in America but in the UK it’s encouraged by the NHS to move to finger foods as quickly as your baby can tolerate them to help hand eye coordination. It’s also advised to start giving them finger foods by at least 8 months, or there’s an increased risk of choking because they’re more used to purées.
Also my pediatrician said at 6 months my baby can eat scrambled eggs and peanut butter now i been scared to give him peanut butter because i thought they wasn’t supposed to get that until one in case of allergies
You can definitely safely prepare solids way before 1! I've never heard anyone say to wait before. How bizare!
@Shaniyah that’s actually why it’s better’s do it before one. Before one babies can’t have severe reactions to allergies such as their throats closing. Only thing you shouldn’t do is cow’s milk and honey.
Only thing you should not give a baby between 6 months and 1 is honey and cow’s milk. Their organs can’t process those yet
@Mohannahas thank you so much I knew about the honey it can paralyze them but my cousin is a nurse and said they can have it in stuff like honey grams but not straight honey and i dont even drink cows milk
@Shaniyah that’s surprising for me actually. My aunt is a Dr. and she told need to avoid anything with honey. Probably just as a precaution since the toxins could still survive after being baked. But it’s low
Thats not true. I did baby led weaning when my son turned 6 months. His first food was solid. He never choked. You just need to cook and cut it the right way. Download solid start, they show you how to prep each food per age.
Started weaning at 4 months, he has homemade puréed meals and loves them
UPDATE: I gave my daughter pieces of chicken with shredded cheese on the side she loved it ! And ate like a champ ! Will def try more finger food 🥹🥹🥹🙏🏻
The pediatrician is wrong sad to say. I started by introducing baby porridge in the morning, now I’m up to porridge in the morning and puréed vegetables at dinner. I will be introducing solids at 6 months.
Bad advice she should be eating more than just a puree.
your baby definitely can have solids before 1, thats how they learn to chew correctly! i would look into getting a new pediatrician
They’re wrong. You can offer purées and finger food form 6months. Ensure all finger foods are well cooked and research choking vs gagging.
