Throwing food

My MIL was round over Christmas and was horrified at the amount of food my son was throwing during meal times. It made me feel really bad about it 😢. He’s been doing it a while now and I just tend to ignore and pick the food up and say ‘no’ and put it in a separate bowl. It’s killing me though 🥲 when does this phase stop? He’s so fussy now, I can’t deal with it. Please tell me your babies are like this?

My son throws food sometimes, he's 1 it's to be expected 🤷🏻‍♀️ your MIL must have raised perfect children 😂 don't feel bad about it

My son looks me dead in the eye ... Picks food up and purposely drops it off the side of his highchair ... Babies will be babies

Little one is learning object permanence. The fact that even though they can't see the food, it's still there. Our 1 year old will say uh oh drop it or sneakily slide it under between his legs and then look for it. There are things you can try like less food to start with, having a bowl to put things in if they don't want them, so saying "if you don't want it put it in there instead of dropping it". Obviously, you have to model by picking things up and putting them in. I'm not saying it will work because they are all different, but it's something to try. Our 4 year old wasn't really a food thrower but loved to throw coasters or cushions off sofas as soon as he went to anyone's house! Our 1 year old loves to uh oh the food on the floor and laugh. Just know it's totally normal, infact it shows they are developing that understanding, as frustrating as it is. Long live the vax carpet washer 🤣 Just don't feel shamed about it. Xx

@Nicole ditto!!!!! We always put a pvc tablecloth on the floor under the high chair. But the other day he was given spaghetti bolognaise and he chucked it so far across the room I have no doubt he would have qualified for the Olympics 😭🤣🤣

Totally normal, ignore her she's forgotten!

@Heather thank you so much. Your comment has made me feel so much better. She made me feel like I had done something wrong for him to be throwing the food in the first place. Do you know how long the phase lasts for?

@Alex thank you 🥲

My daughter always drops food off her high chair, I thought it was just a normal baby thing to do? Sometimes she’ll be eating something then decide she wants soemthing else so she’ll drop the thing she was originally eating to eat the other piece. I just pick it up and put it back on her tray. It’s the same with cutlery, I always put cutlery on her plate but she will take it and throw it across the room as if it’s ruining her food 😂. It doesn’t bother me much to be honest as I thought it was just part of them learning
