In my case (based in the Uk 9 years ago), it was positive for a strain of HPV with “abnormal cells” (there are many different strains of HPV some being more agressive than others), I was asked to do a colposcopy in hospital within the following few weeks, this showed basically the same thing, no better no worse, so at that stage they just told me to give it a year and then have another colposcopy which showed that my body had managed to get rid of the abnormal cells (which is what happens most of the time) and was negative for HPV, from there on I went back to the normal smear test every 3 years and always been negative since
@Nina how was the colposcopy? Currently waiting for my appointment
@Abigail (Abby) not much fun I’m afraid lol, somewhat more uncomfortable than a smear test and a bit longer, but not torture either Hope it goes well for you ☺️
I have had 3 abnormal pap smear. The first was when I was 16 nearly 15 years ago. This came back for HPV which resolved on its own. The next two were the past two years. Those were negative for HPV and I was advised that the type of cells found are the most commonly found abnormal cells and basically they would just continue to monitor with my yearly exams and go from there. I will say it causes me anxiety. But I've basically been told I likely have nothing to worry about.
Just because this is recent for me- so if this is your first positive then you will go back for another smear test in a years time instead of the 3 year gap. I had a positive smear test at my 2nd test after the year and my dr rang and said the hospital will contact me to arrange an examination of my cervix. Did your dr not contact you and explain - just asking because it depends what the positive result is for is it the HPV? If you google it we all have it but some just have high volumes that’s the questionable thing- it can clear up on its own or we might need treatment etc. it will mention cancer if you google it but again if your doctor hasn’t mentioned that there’s any abnormal cells etc then nothing to worry about. Hope that helps
