Kid Not potty trained before kindergarten. What happens?

My child will be 5 this year. Behavioral issues has hindered the process and my mental health has taken a toll and I honestly keep stopping because it gets to be Alot. I also live with my dad and swinging the potty and the messes he makes intentionally are tricky as I don’t want to break or mess up anything. He is hyper most of the day too. Anyway, I don’t know if he will be ready by kindergarten and I am considering homeschooling but different reasons including that. I can’t imagine him going to school not potty trained. We have not gotten in for an evaluation yet but looking into therapy for him. I am a little embarrassed about this but I also need to make a decision on his schooling. We are going to start potty ing again.

Is he autistic? Therapy may be beneficial Either way, this needs to be a priority for both of you. You can delay school until the following year, but work should be done to prepare him for starting for sure

This sounds like possibly autism, he needs to be evaluated asap. Behavioral, hyper, he’s 5 and not potty trained. Call your local school district for evaluation.

I have a friend whose son was kinda potty trained… not fully. If he had an accident they called her and sent him home. They didn’t really want to deal with it. My son is potty trained and in preschool, he’s had 3-4 accidents since august and they are much more forgiving. He has extra clothes and underwear and they will change him. You can always call the local school district and see what their policies are. I will say that it’s important for their own dignity to be taught how to use the potty. It took us a full month to really get the hang of everything and fully dedicating that month to it. My son was 3 at the time.

@Sierra Thank you and not that I know of but I have questioned it a few times. Just Can’t get in fast enough for evaluation but we were referred. I failed to mention he has good moments at telling me that he has to go and uses potty before bath, but if we are doing it all day, it gets tough and those other things come into play. All the places here gave a 8 month or longer wait for an evaluation and he will be 5 already by then. Fingers crossed. I appreciate the feedback.

@Celeste yea, that sounds like alot and I want to avoid that as much as possible. He has been home with me since birth. Hopefully this time around goes better. I failed to mention he has good moments at telling me that he has to go and uses potty before bath, but if we are doing it all day, it gets tough and those other things come into play. All the places here gave a 8 month or longer wait for an evaluation and he will be 5 already by then. Fingers crossed.

@Nicole Sandy Thank you. agreed! No diagnoses but I have suspected autism. Just not sure. I failed to mention he has good moments at telling me that he has to go and uses potty before bath, but if we are doing it all day, it gets tough and those other things come into play. All the places here gave a 8 month or longer wait for an evaluation and he will be 5 already by then so that makes sense. Wondering if I should wait until 5 at this point. Fingers crossed.

I used visuals in our bathroom and referred to them often, I had a little potty in both bathrooms, treasure box full of goodies for incentives, and lots of books- specifically about pooping (that’s what we had the hardest time with). I did not use pull-ups. I went straight to underwear. So I had to plan that out… laundry wise. I had a little bucket I’d soak soiled underwear in vinegar and water. Then I used laundry bags and washed them separately. If he pooped, I’d take his undies outside and hose them off before soaking them in the bucket. I also had sodium bicarbonate that I washed them separately undies with, in addition to laundry detergent. I did an underwear load every single day during this process. I also had about 20 pairs of training underwear, so he always had an extra clean pair and I didn’t have to rush with laundry. It is exhausting. But stick to it every day. It gets better. It will click in their minds. He will get it. For visuals- I used teacherspayteachers.com

And googled books about potty training (usually for kids with autism) but the visuals were so good for just littles potty training! I’m also a teacher 😊 I made a potty training boot camp basically, lol.
