Pitch dark or nightlight?

We’ve always used a little wave nightlight on the lowest orange setting to signal bedtime but all the sleep guidance says absolutely pitch black. This has always made me nervous as I often look over to check on my baby and I’m up every few hours breastfeeding anyway. Just wondering what others are doing and if you think it makes a difference to sleep quality?

We have a mamas and Papas temperature egg that we put under his cot. It gives just enough light, and it’s not shining directly on him. We try have the room as dark as possible (other than the egg). We use the monitor to check on him though, even though we are in the same room. The image is better than if I had to squint in the dark.

I also have an orange nightlight on lowest setting but not too close to cot. It gives just enough light for when I breast feed.

I think a red/ orange light can help with their sleep or something anyway!! So I’ve seen …

I like to be able to see him so we have a low setting night light and he sleeps fine with it I wouldn't worry x

We start with red light but she won’t go to sleep until it’s pitch black. If I need to see when I’m breastfeeding in the night I pop it back on but I’ve learnt to do it in the dark 😂

I have the room in darkness and have a portable nightlight that is just touch activated that I keep close and switch it on and off if she wakes or need to check on her. I listened to an Andrew Huberman podcast before I was pregnant about sleep and it mentioned that the brain needs darkness to fully develop and I am sure it said children who sleep with it on have adverse effects on brain development although can't remember exactly what it is. There has been a few studies done about it affecting circadian rhythm too. X
