tongue tie dilemma

so when LO was like a week old our family friend who is also a family doctor visited to see us & she mentioned baby’s tongue tie immediately & said we should have it corrected but we weren’t sure if it was severe or not so we went to the professional for a consultation & she said its not necessary but the family friend doctor says it is & still says it & so did another family friend who is also a doctor. we may schedule a consultation w another otalaryngologist but WWYD? like how do i know who’s correct? & i’m scared to do it now bc LO is 6 months but i wanna do it if he needs it but why are they saying 2 different things? ahhhhhhhhh help

Is it effecting him in any type of way? My little girl had hers done at 10 weeks old as we thought it might help with her reflux (turned out it was a milk allergy). My fiancé is tongue tied and he’s never had any issues with it and he’s nearly 27 years old now. It’s entirely up to you x

@Julia eats fine but he seems to always have his mouth open so my family friend who noticed it first said he could be uncomfortable & also it could help his sleep but since its not hindering him rn its hard to say but i dont want it to be worse when he’s older. my partner also has a tongue tie & is fine but its different w everyone. i will have to do more research! thank u for the input 🫶🏽

Always get a second opinion but if it doesn’t bother him I wouldn’t do it. I had a tongue tie myself and had it done around 3 years old and I can’t pronounce some letters and sounds. So definitely do some more research and get a second opinion from another doctor and if you’re in the UK you could always ask your HV and try to get a consultation with a maxillofacial consultant if you can for more information😊x

You can do it now or wait. If it’s not affecting their eating I would wait, doing it too young they can actually grow back. If it’s affecting their eating and you can see they’re uncomfortable then I would do it though. So really depends on the severity

@Nikki its not affecting his eating but the family friend doctor mentions it every time we see her so it must be something? i’m gonna get a second opinion

Eh I have friends that have done it and regret it cause it grew back. My daughter has a lip tie and the doctor and dentist said to not worry about it and if I want to get it done when she’s older for cosmetic reasons I can.

Got my sons done at two weeks old because of feeding issues as well as he could not rest his tongue on the roof of his mouth. If your LO cannot rest histongue on the roof of his mouth it can cause a lot of problems down the road. Procedure is very quick, I would seek someone out who specializes in the procedure! They will also do a consultation before you commit!

@Nikki the dr needs to prescribe post surgery exercises to prevent this! We had 6 weeks of massages and stretches we had to do.

@Kiki is right, we had to do this for our son along with lip ties and his cheeks. He was also a preemie. If you don’t get it fixed it can cause speech problems too. Definitely go to a specialist. I’d listen to your friend she could be onto something. You’re welcome to message me! My son is 4 now. He’s completely fine and I’m so glad we got his mouth fixed.

I didn’t have my oldest fixed at all and it caused feeding, food and speech issues and he still has a slight lisp and speech issues at almost 9. And by the time, we realized he was almost 3 and I didn’t want to put a toddler through something like that

thank you ladies for input. i would rather do it than not but my partner is on the fence. the first specialist i saw is an otalaryngologist and she said its not necessary which is why i was so confused when the doctor who isn’t a specialist in that field said it should be corrected. i am going to see a second specialist for another opinion and will go from there. i just hope its not a huge procedure since he’s “older” now… @ 6 months.
