Can your LO feed themselves, their meal, with a spoon?

Context; At nursery, they're helping my LO eat with a spoon/feeding him as if he does it himself he throws the spoon/mixes it, sometimes puts it in his mouth/smears food everywhere. Basically plays with it. So to get him to actually eat, he's being handfed. We do the same at home, as well as letting him practice. Should be be able to feed himself with a spoon by now?

Our little is getting there but it’s still sooo messy. If we’re in a rush and don’t have time for a big clean up, I’ll spoon feed him but otherwise I let him get on with it. They’re only learning. Wouldn’t worry they’re still so young! 😊

Our baby can feed herself with a pre loaded spoon but she hasn't quite grasped picking up food with a spoon by herself. She does tap the spoon in the bowl so understands the concept but she very rarely gets anything on it 😂 Like Sam we also feed her and let her do some too otherwise she would not eat anything and she is a rubbish eater as it is!

My daughter will eat off a spoon if I hand it to her but she doesn’t know how to scoop. She still prefers to eat with her hands so she eats everything this way. I’ve never spoon fed her as I’ve always done baby led weaning. She even eats yoghurt, weetabix etc with her hands so it is extremely messy 😂but she does love her food and is a good eater other than not being able to use cutlery x

My little boy will only take a couple of bites of finger food that’s the extent of self-feeding. I’ve been encouraging and nursery too but if kit spoon fed he just won’t eat at all ☹️ I hate getting nursery updates he’s not eaten all day

My Nov baby can but my son at this age couldn’t and still prefers to use his hands at 4 🤦‍♀️. Keep doing what you’re doing allowing him to practice. They all get there in the end xx

@Luba I've been in a similar position, it's horrible! I find it so stressful

Thank you everyone! I felt like he was doing great, and wasn't worried but when nursery said they were spoon feeding like this wasn't the norm I worried a bit. He knows what to do and can put a spoon to his mouth and mix it in the bowl 😅 but there's no way he'd feed himself a whole meal

30th November baby, he’s just starting to with a spoon. I have to load it most times so he actually gets some food, but he is scooping and going into his mouth. It’s very messy lol x

My son will only eat with a spoon/ fork. I tend to pre load it as it’s less messy! He refuses to be spoon fed at home and nursery. Sometimes he’ll let us spoon feed yogurt but 9/10 it’s eat it himself or he won’t eat it. It’s super messy but he’s been this way since 6 months so we just embrace it. Every LO is different though as long as they get the opportunity to practice self feeding I don’t see an issue with helping x

Yes and no, she can hold a spoon but she seems to give up so easily and holds the spoon with one hand and eats with her other hand, same goes for forks she’s not interested at all sometimes she does sometimes she doesn’t depends if she’s up for it
