Glucose test

I had a glucose test done around 14 weeks per OBGYN orders. I passed it. Now they want me to get another one done at 28 weeks. I'm frustrated but do you think if I passed the first one that I'll pass this one too?

Not necessarily. I passed my first, failed my second, and then passed the 3 hour one. It can definitely be frustrating to have to do all these tests, but its too ensure yours and baby's safety and health 🥰

Why would you have to do more than one if you passed it? I'd decline unless there was a really good reason for doing another.

@Amanda I really dont know. I told the nurse and the midwife that I had one done already 😕

@Amanda I had to do more than one because I am overweight, which can be a precursser to gestational diabetes. So an early test and then one at the regular time is suggested. Maybe OP has test results/precursors for gestational diabetes as well?

Eugh glucose tests do suck (I had to do the 3hr one, I was ready to throw punches by the end…) I think GD is one of those unfortunately gnarly things that can become detectable suddenly (even post 28 weeks.) So particularly if you have risk factors, it’s sensible to repeat tests… though a previous negative test could for sure be a good sign (as in many cases it does surface earlier.)

@allison my advice is to ask then! It is your right to decline if you disagree.

Sending supportive vibes, in the middle of my 3 hour glucose test currently. I’m definitely in the camp of just getting the labs done for peace of mind and definitively ruling it out. 28 weeks is standard for the regular glucose test. It’s interesting they opted to test at 14 weeks too

@Ashley they wanted to test early at 14 weeks because I had a history of gestational diabetes 10 years ago 🤦🏻‍♀️ but my last 2 previous pregnancies I had no gestational diabetes

Pregnancy alterates hormones, usually you need to get one done later on as it’s when it Can appeared the gestational diabetes after 28 weeks. I have history of insulin resistance so I got my done at 14 too, came back normal. Then regular one at 28, normal but it was higher than my regular one so they kept an eye and got it done again at 32 and then it was very clear I had Gestational diabetes. It can happen to anyone regardless the history of previous diabetes. Better be safe than sorry, if you do end up with GD and it is not treated properly it might cause serious problems to baby

What you could do is buy a little finger prick test yourself and take some readings over the next few days. This is what I did. I got mostly normal readings and didn't feel the need to go for the GD test. Not saying this is wise if they have reason to believe you may have it (big baby or big bump etc), but the home testing kits are definitely an indicator. Happy to send you the link to the one I used which was excellent

@Lucy i definitely don't have a big bump lol. I'm 25 weeks today and just started showing last week.

@Lucy I did this too! Monitored for 2 weeks and midwife was fine with that.

My friend had to do it that early and repeat further along in her pregnancy because of having a family history of diabetes

I passed mine at 28 weeks then had a 36 week growth scan which showed baby was big and got diagnosed with gestational diabetes at 37 weeks xx

@allison So I guess this is just precautionary as you've had a history of it. You don't have to accept. My home testing gave me a lot of reassurance. Plus they always test your urine whenever you go in. If anything flagged they'd get you in pretty sharpish!

Not necessarily. I passed my first test at 14 weeks and failed both the one hour and three hour at 28 weeks. Was diagnosed with GD and ended up on insulin for my fasting numbers.

This happened to me aswell. I refused it at 28 weeks and did a blood test instead. I did mine at 14 weeks which is way too early and the ladies were confused about why I was there. My doctor rushed me in making it seem like I was already overdue for it! So stupid to do it so early. But ultimately no, I didn’t do it again but instead did bloods.

The whole cause of GD is the placenta. It releases a hormone that stops your body absorbing the glucose in your blood effectively. The bigger your placenta gets, the more insulin resistance you could have. The bad side is that your body will produce insulin to counteract the high blood sugars. Your baby is also exposed to the sugar level in your blood, but baby has to produce their own insulin to counteract the sugars in their blood effectively.
