Percentiles

Context; my son is 4 months 3 weeks and the 40th percentile for weight (but something stupid like 98th for length!) Just wondering how low the percentile would be for you to take action, or if there would even be a need to? I’m not worried, as he’s growing in height and meeting milestones. His percentile for weight is decreasing with his age, though!

Is his doctor/HV worried about his weight? If they aren’t worried then I wouldn’t be worried. My daughter’s weight was up and down due to a milk allergy and even then they didn’t take action when she dropped to the 5th from the 25th x

@Julia the doctor wouldn’t know about his weight as their scales are ‘broken’ and he didn’t weigh him at the 6-8 week check, nor at any vaccinations when I asked 🤪 and I’ve not had the same health visitor, I had a few different ones and they’ve not been in contact since 12 weeks and I’ve not got a contact number for them. Maybe I should go to a weigh in clinic!

@Beth So how do you know his weight is decreasing unless I read that wrong? Libraries often have scales to weigh your baby on as well x

My baby is on the 9th for weight and 98th for length and no one is concerned.

@Julia ah!! Apologies for not explaining : I weighed him about 2 months ago at baby massage as they had the proper scales and then again this week at home on our scales (which I know will be slightly less accurate). He’s definitely gaining weight, just going down in percentile. It might not even matter, which is why I’m asking! 😊

@Andreia brilliant, thanks!

Hi there the weight will go up and down as they have growth spurts. As long as he is gaining I wouldn’t worry x

Is your baby moving around a lot? Like rolling and attempting to crawl? They lose their chunk pretty quickly this way and it’s not concerning. I don’t think a doctor would be concerned about dropping weight percentiles if height percentiles are maintained, unless the weight percentile is very low like 5%
