Godparents and baptism

Hey hey, I’m just writing to ask if anyone can enlighten me. My little girl is due to get christened in June and we had godparents in mind, but we have read mixed information online regarding if they have to be christened themselves in order to be your child’s godparent. So anyone who has their child baptised, do you know the answer. Thank you in advance x

Is it a Catholic Church ? Yeah that’s what my BD church said to us.. my sister isn’t baptized so she can’t be the God parent to my child.. but ask the church they will give you the most accurate information

Strictly speaking, godparents do need to be baptised, but they also don’t check….

I had my little boy christened in august in a church of England church and the godparents had to be baptised too

We (Catholics) were told that as long as one godparent was baptised into the faith, you could have others that weren’t. We had 3 total - two that weren’t Catholic and one that was.

My church says that 1 godparent needs to be a practising catholic, and any others need to be at least christened. If they’re not christened, they can’t be godparents only witnesses xx

I was baptised into Church of England and my catholic auntie was one of my sponsors, and when I was a godparent at a CofE church they didn’t ask me if I was baptised from memory. I think best to ask the vicar/priest?

So according to churches they should be baptised and if they’re getting baptised catholic godparents need to be catholic, but they don’t actually mind or check so I wouldn’t worry too much.

My church verifies that godparents are confirmed Catholics. I didn’t realize how strict it was!

We got our boy baptised catholic, our church said as long as they were christened (it didn’t matter if CofE or RC) it was fine! You’re best off asking you’re own church as every church is different I think xx

I was told have to be if they're going to be god parents when I looked into my son being christened

It depends on the church - my ex was told he had to be but nobody checked to actually find out 😜

It really depends on the reverend taking the service. Ours said he didn’t mind but others may have had issue. We also had to fill out a form stating who the godparents are and if they had been christened themselves, so they did ask.

Only one needs to be baptised themselves. However, none of ours had to prove anything

I had my daughter baptised in November and they did say they must be baptised/christened but they never actually checked so I could have said yes and they wouldn't have known.

The same people that would baptize their child wouldn’t lie to the church about being baptized, right? lol what am I reading here?
