Omeprazole & Gripe Water?

Omeprazole works great for my LO’s reflux but causes so much wind that he cries hysterically and can’t seem to pass it on his own. Is it ok to take gripe water when taking omeprazole? Or is there something else that would be good to try? Any advice welcome!

How long has he been on the omeprazole for? We found wind was bad for the first 2ish week and gradually got better, but now baby has learn to trump on her own it’s a lot easier😂we always find that gripe water makes her reflux horrendous so we avoid. We also always wind after having the omeprazole and she lets out a big burp. Also I do bicycle kicks with her first thing every morning and kind of push her legs into her stomach and she passes it easy then. Dummy in mouth if they’re tense because of the pain to help them relax whilst doing it. I’ve never found anything useful for the wind eg infacol etc, it all seemed to make reflux worse in my experience☹️

Reflux is basically excess air intake which can then up being brought up and making them sick. Always look at feeding and latch and why they have so much wind

@Alice thank you for replying. I’ve had my latch, feeding position & flow looked at as well as a tongue tie cut, and I’ve removed dairy from my diet, so really not sure where else the gas is coming from :( is there anything else that can cause it?

Get a second opinion on feeding and tongue tie. Who cut the tongue tie? Have you been doing plenty of oral exercises?

@Alice we had it done privately and recently had a LLL lactation consultant re-assess. If we reduce omeprazole the wind goes, but then he’s uncomfortable with the acid instead 😣

I would be surprised if an LLL consultant is qualified in tongue tie. Did the practitioner give you oral exercises to do post division?

@Alice ok will try to get another opinion. She did but it was 11 weeks ago now - is it worth revisiting the exercise do you think?

When you say “the exercise”.. does that mean you were only given one exercise to do? Oral exercises are really important to improve the tongue function (the tongue is a muscle after all and is weak if it’s been restricted). Therefore, oral exercises are necessary for quite a while and will take time to see improvements

@Alice sorry, no, was a typo - she gave us a few but we didn’t do them as religiously as we should’ve so perhaps that’s what has caused all these issues now 😣 is it too late do you think or ok to start them again? He’s 15 weeks now. Thanks for all your advice btw!

No never too late! Depending on what exercises you were given but I would definitely be getting under his tongue to work on him lifting it and also encouraging his movement side to side. My littlest had a second TT snip at 4 months which is when I learnt most the exercises. You’re more than welcome!! 🥰

@Alice fab I will try this thank you so much 😊
