Fever!

Hi ladies! My daughter is 2yrs old and has just started nursery and has already caught some sort of flu. Her fever is 38/39 on the thermometer but she’s eating some things and still drinking fluids but the fever is still here as well as taking calpol. She’s never had a fever for this long so I am worried as she has no other symptoms besides the fever. When do I take her to the doctors???

Hi ,have you tried given neurofen 2 hours after calpol if the temperature doesn’t drop? Also they say you should wait 5 days and if a child still has a fever then take it to the gp

As long as you feel like she’s coping then having a fever is a sign of fighting the infection. Calpol and nurofen as Indre suggested, to keep the temp okay. If you are at all concerned then call 111 and they will tell you what to do.

Give her calpol and then neurofen 2 hours after - that usually brings my little one’s temp down. If she’s still eating and drinking fluids I wouldn’t be too phased. If she’s coping then that’s a good sign. If you are at all worried about her at any point - ring 111 and they’ll advise you on what’s best for her 🫶🏻 it’s a good thing that she’s eating and drinking it will keep her hydrated and her strength up. I’d be worried if she wasn’t eating and drinking xxx

At first I was giving her nurofen but now I’ve started giving her calpol. I’ll wait till Monday and if not I’ll take her to the doctors but she is eating some things but she’s drinking more so I’ve even given her yogurts and milk whatever she wants. Thank you for responding girls! x

How long has she had the fever for? X

Have you given any ibuprofen? It always works better on a temp than paracetamol. If then it doesn’t settle contact 111 You can also alternate giving paracetamol and then a few hours later give ibuprofen

@Bex since Friday late afternoon

@Ceri-Ann yeah after I give her medicine shes back to herself the next hour and then as soon as it hits evening time she’s back to being irritated and fever comes back

@Shania Like the others have said I’d alternate between calpol and ibuprofen. When we saw a doctor last month she said not to worry too much until they’ve had a high temperature for 5+ days, unless they’ve got more serious symptoms with the fever. Monitor wet nappies and make sure she’s well hydrated. Hope she’s feeling better soon x

@Bex She’s had wet nappies and all of that I’m probably just over stressing but thank you so much! 🤍

@Shania It’s our job as mummas to stress 🥴 But there’s lots of horrible lurgies going round at the moment and if she’s not been at nursery for too long,‘it’s a real shock to their system. My daughters had sooo many illnesses since starting in June 😫

@Shania sounds like a typical viral infection as long as the temp settles I’d ride it out for at least 48hrs

@Bex yeah my daughters only just started nursery she’s been there for 3 days😂😂not prepared for the rest of the illnesses she’s about to get. Lord help us all😂😂

NHS website is great whenever you're not sure whether to seek medical advice! Hope your little one is better soon 🤞 https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/fever-in-children/

Yep typical nursery germ fest.....the only time I'm not on board with the sharing is caring. If she's still lively, eating, drinking and urinating it shall pass! If it gets worse book an appointment just to be on the safe side.

The body is using the fever to fight the infection, it may be a good thing it’s not come down. By all means get them checked it you’re worried but the fever in itself isn’t dangerous.

When my son had the flu a nurse told me he’ll have a temp for a few days regardless of the calpol/nurofen but it was just a case of bringing it down as much as possible until the worst passes. Just keep a close on them xx

Nurofen is defo better for temps x

@Amy yeah she was taking that and then I went to Asda pharmacy last night and they said switch it up to calpol and tbh she’s been alright this morning but the fever comes and goes. But if she is still like this tomorrow imma take her doctors because my ass worries too much 😂😂
