Runners, did you continue during pregnancy?

I don't run lots, just a couple of 5km a week, but during my first pregnancy I tried to continue and felt so dizzy and light headed I stopped. I'd had a miscarriage previously and so was extra paranoid about slipping too. I'd like to continue running in my next pregnancy if possible, as I regret stopping in my first. Just curious what other runners did...advice appreciated!

I ran once after finding out then decided to stop. Started again when she was about 4 months old but only once a week instead of twice.

You can defo keep running if you’re already a runner. I know people who continued to work out in the gym throughout their pregnancy My advice would be to listen to your body, slow down if you need to and do shorter distances if it’s too much and consult with your midwife about your exercise plans x

I used to run a lot before getting pregnant, a couple half marathons a year plus some shorter races sprinkled in. (We struggled with infertility, and running helped burn off some of the stress) I did keep running with my OB’s knowledge and enthusiastic approval, but personally kept my runs to 30-45 mins and nothing too fast. I was actually training for a half when I got pregnant, but switched to the 5k after I found out. When my lung capacity started being affected, I added in regular walking breaks. So I’d run easy 4 minutes then walk briskly for 1 minute. As my pregnancy progressed I’d shorten my running time and lengthen my walk breaks as needed. By the end I was running for 2 minutes and brisk walking for 3. I stopped running after my son dropped (a bit more than a week before birth) and it just felt too weird.

I’d definitely be careful if you’re feeling dizzy but you can definitely continue running. Just listen to your body. I never stopped my workouts but modified them as needed as I progressed through my pregnancy.

I was a marathon/endurance runner with my older two and ran straight through both pregnancies, 5-8 miles a day. I broke my talus 2020 and decided to hang it up. Now I’m an aerialist/pole dancer and I’ve also kept going, 18 weeks and still taking advanced classes. That said I just listen to my body. I’ve taken a week off here and there my first trimester due to general fatigue, but being active helps me keep feeling “me” mentally and my doctors haven’t asked me to stop.
