Toilet training!

I was wondering when people started toilet training? I have started putting my 11month old, she will be one in 4 days, on the toilet before a bath JUST to familiarise her with the toilet (not to get her to wee or poo) and she did her first wee on the toilet this evening. We aren’t planning to toilet train until summertime but was wondering if it can be done earlier. I’m very very shocked that she even sat on the toilet for as long as she did let alone doing a wee lol Also, what methods have you used and what do you think is the best way to go about it PSA: we wont be toilet training for a few months as we are planning on moving house so don’t want her going through too many transitions at once xx

We started using the potty at home at a similar age, went really well! She’s 3 next month and has been in pants full time nearly for as long as she was ever in nappies. If you can start I say go for it! Before they get really nappy dependant and it turns into a big deal. I would just keeping putting her on regularly at home, when she wakes up, after a drink and meals and meals etc xx

@Imy thank you! It was never my plan to start this early but she is such a clever girl, im confident she will do absolutely fine! I assume this would work if i sat her on the loo after a nappy change too? Xx

Personally we waited until she was really ready, she was 2 years 10 month old. Then it was all over and done with in 3 days, with very little effort. Where I know people who try early and have months and months of it or stop and start.

Almost three! He got it in less than a week.

@Lisa thank you! This is why I want to wait, so that she understands what is going on and can communicate when she needs to go. at the moment she can only communicate very few things so it wouldn’t be ideal. I will still show her the toilet and build up that confidence for when the time comes xx

I'm not toilet training per se, but I do put my LG (10mo) on the potty after naps and sporadically through the day. I sign 'toilet' and say 'wee wee' or 'poo poo' if she does one and be super happy/cheerful. She generally does either one or both after a nap.

@Carys thats fantastic! We do baby signing so this would be perfect for me to try. Im so glad its going well for you xx

I personally think 11 months is too early. Can they get on the potty themselves? Can they communicate they need to go? Can they pull their trousers/clothes down and back up? It’s generally considered that 20 months - 36 months is the best time, when they are showing signs of being ready, I.e everything written above, and hiding when doing a poo (wanting privacy).

@Amy Definitely! I’m not going to be toilet training anytime soon, I just wanted to see what others said/have done as I do know that it can be possible and as a nursery teacher i have seen it done before. But I do agree with what you have said and this is why I want to wait, so that she understands what is going on and can communicate when she needs to go. at the moment she can only communicate very few things so it wouldn’t be ideal. I will still show her the toilet and build up that confidence and familiarity for when the time comes xx

Potty trained at 20 months. She was fab and got it amazingly. I potty trained as nappy changes were a battle and was just awful for us all. So glad I did! X

Have a look at elimination communication, I’ve worked for families who have had their children potty trained within months of being born obviously not able to take themselves but the parents know their cues/when they go and they get into a routine as well and they haven’t needed nappies from 6months onwards! Before disposable diapers potty training was much much earlier than it is now you really don’t have to wait for 2/3 xx

I started when he was 2 initially but he wasn't ready until after he turned 3. He picked it up really quickly, was toilet trained in a few days

I plan to train just after she starts walking (steady on her feet) that’s my ideal plan. She’ll be one next month

Mine started us handing us clean diapers when he needed changing so off the back of that we put a potty in his nursery and another one in the living room and he will actually crawl over and tap it when he needs to go now. This started just before he turned eleven months and he’s a year old now. I don’t put pressure on him and he’s still in diapers but he does go in his potty several times a day. I figure it’s him who’s shown us readiness so we’re just enabling him and following his cues.

I actually help parents with this for work and we always tell moms that you’ll know when your child is ready, if they’re curious and excited to try on the potty go for it! My rule is to aim to be potty trained by preschool so anytime before 3-4yrs old

When your child is ready, I would roll with it, rule of thumb is once they can pull clothes and underwear up and down.but saying that my friend began potty training from 6months and her son was dry day and night before 2

We potty trained at 23 mths - it went well but even that felt quite young. I really wouldn’t bother doing anything potty related at 11mths. I’m assuming your child can’t even walk or talk yet?! But obviously each child is different and only you know your child 👍🏻 Do you pick her up and put her on the big toilet? A potty she can get to herself on the ground is better if you really have to do it this young 👍🏻
