Baby formula - strange ingredients? Storage advice?

Hi mums! I’m switching baby from EBF to formula but noticed a lot have strange ingredients like vegetable oils, coconut oil, etc… does anyone know if that’s ok? Sounds unhealthy - could you recommend healthier brand options if you’ve researched and tried any? Also the aptamil powder container says use within 4 weeks of opening - has anyone used it much later and do you know if it’s ok? We only tried it once at 1 week old and now at 6 months were thinking of using the same unfinished container of formula powder… Thank you!

Vegetable oils and coconut oils are often included in baby formula to provide essential fatty acids, which are important for a baby's growth and development. These oils help mimic the fat content of breast milk, which is vital for brain development, energy, and absorbing fat-soluble vitamins like A, D, E, and K. Vegetable oils (such as palm, sunflower, or soy) contain a blend of polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats, which provide linoleic acid and alpha-linolenic acid—key components for proper brain development and cell function. Coconut oil contains medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs), which are easily digestible and can provide quick energy for babies. These oils are added to create a balanced source of fats in formula, similar to those found in breast milk.

Baby formula in the UK has strict regulations to ensure its good for baby and has only what they need to gain weight and have the right nutrients. All brands are basically the same due to this. Don't use out of date formula for your baby, just buy a new one, it's not worth the risk.

Don't use a tub that was opened 6 months ago

Okay so my baby is formula fed now and honestly it’s been fine,I used to do both but anyway I use the aptimal ready made formula, she’s used to it now, I did try powder but found she didn’t like it, guess she got to used to the ready made formula which is abit of a lighter consistency btw compared to the powder one. Also I have powder formula which I’ve had for over a month and was thinking the exact same thing, should I try use it or just chuck it away but it does say use after 4weeks of opening so that’s what I’m gonna do, I know it’s waste of money/product but we can’t risk it. I really hope that helps and if you need any more advice or whatever feel free to message me! Good luck with starting formula, it will be totally fine xx

Some oils are fine, some are not. I've even seen some forrmulas that include trans fat hidden as an emulsifier (mono and diglycerides). You can download the Yuka app to learn about different ingredients.

Kendamil is the only brand without fish oil or palm oil if that bothers you ☺️
