Thirsty toddler

My son is at nursery full time and has just transitioned to “tots” room where they are encouraged/learn to drink from an open cup at mealtimes. He always has a clothes change because he just hasn’t grasped it yet and while they always say he’s had sips of water, I’m not convinced he’s getting what he wants throughout the day or that they offer at any other points. As soon as he gets home he points to the cupboard with his drinks bottle and has 6/7oz of water, and will still have his 8oz bottle of milk before bed. Does anyone else’s return from nursery so thirsty, I’m just wondering if I should bring it up with them

Yes! My LB is frequently thirsty when he gets home. Some days he'll drink 10oz of water within 20mins, other days he drinks 6/7oz and some days it'll be about 4oz. I raised this with the nursery and they said he is offered it all day, they offer him from a different cup to the one I send him in with though and I feel he's probably tipping a lot of it out and therefore not drinking as much as they think he is. Personally I'm not convinced he's being offered it as frequently as they say but not sure what else I can do x

I send my daughter in with her water bottle (not sure that they fill it up during the day?🤷🏼‍♀️) but, I can always see how much she's drank that day. I know that they give my daughter a carton of milk to drink whilst she's there as well. If you've got any questions or concerns, do bring it up with the nursery.

Yep my little boys the same soo thirsty after nursery it’s unreal!

I would encourage offering him an open cup at home. Or a 360 cup to transition. As a previous early years practitioner, we would always offer both of those throughout the day to all children under 2. Specifically at all 3 meal times and 2 snack times x

Def try a 360 cup. Plenty of time to learn to drink from an open cup and can still try that at home. If he’s drinking 6/7oz as soon as he gets in he’s clearly not having enough

I offer a doidy cup at meals which is open and a Tommy tipee free flow cup at other times not in the high chair to save mess. He drinks a lot more from the open cup but its always messy and he often gets soaked. He's getting it though I've always given him the open cup since 6 months old and he has always messily drunk from it
