Speech delay

My son is 3 at the end of March.. he chats away all day every day, understands well, listening well... however he struggles with pronunciation. As his mum I can understand everything he is saying however others can't! I'm now wondering if this is a speech delay as such? I'm sure he will get there in his own time but I can't help but over think

My son is the same. We are seeing Speech and Languge next week so I will see then what they say. We did see a speech and language privately a while ago and she said he is behind but should catch up and may need some sessions when he is further along to help pronunciation but not to worry x

If he's talking lots that's a good thing. Are there particular letters he struggles with?

Theres actually a lot of sounds that aren’t age appropriate until 5 or 6 years old. If you want to practice start with the individual sounds, can he hear and copy them correctly? I teach nursery and a lot of the S+L reports come back as mostly age appropriate as long as the understanding is there

Totally normal. X

Hey! I had my son's assessment with SALT and thought I'd share. My son misses the consonants at the beginning of words (e.g. cup would be up, playing is aying). This is classed as atypical and we are being taken on by speech and language. This is for every word he says though. However, if it is missing end consonants (e.g. walkin instead of walking) this is typical development for their age, as is substitution (e.g. purple being said as burple) and would be classed as normal at the moment. Hope that's helpful!
