Mum guilt!

Hello lovelies, I’m reaching out to anyone who can help me because this is starting to really take a toll on me as a mum! I need help in trying to teach my 1.5 year old daughter new words and putting those words to actions ect! I feel like all I see is babies younger or the same age as her excelling in this especially in social media and it’s now led to horrendous mum guilt that I’m not doing the right things to help her develop further! Please if anyone has any suggestions or advice I’m open!

I would just read to her and talk to her like you would anyone else - she will pick up words as she’s ready. You’re a good mama xx

My partner stressed about this alot when our son was younger. I would start by breaking it down, is she meeting her milestones ? sometimes kids (like my son) will meet other milestones before speech which doesn't necessarily mean a delay. Secondly, I would find a method that helps keep her engaged and curious about learning this could be singing the words, reading books and flashcards - my son wasn't into books till about 4 he would just tear them up but LOVES singing so when there are difficult words or letters we sing it out. thirdly, take a breath and take some time to tackle why you are stressed. Little kids watch, learn and adapt based on our behaviour and how we manage things. Take care of yourself so that you can take care of her. And finally, if all else fails take her to a doctor, hearing checks around this age or slightly older are a sign for speech delays, primary care professionals are there to help - make sure you also have a doctor who will listen to your concerns.

Thank you for the support and advice! I’ll definitely implement this and hopefully see progress as time goes on. I think it’s just hard in this day and age with so many different things going on with social media and it’s easy to fall into a bit of a rut as a parent!

I was the same with my little one he just started speaking loads of words in the last 3 weeks and he’s 26 months. Before then barely anything and I was so stressed. I also signed up with raising little talkers which helped me know how to help him learn which i implemented straight away and noticed doing what she said worked too! She does have loads of free content on her instagram too! She’s a speech pathologist! I wouldn’t stress too much. My doc said usually by 2 that’s when the words start to come, it’s like he was storing all the words and decided to just let them all out! Haha I got hearing tests done too just in case there was any hearing issues. But there wasn’t so it was just a matter of time! Good luck!

Oh I’m so glad he’s started chatting away!! I’ll definitely look into the little talkers page, I’ll take any kind help! I did speak to a child health nurse and she wasn’t too concerned but has also recommended a hearing test just to rule that out at least. Thank you for your advice and support x
