Keeps eating things

My 9mo boy keeps eating things he shouldn’t. It’s like he’s trying to kill himself. He’ll shovel food into his mouth until he chokes himself so I have to limit how much food I put in front of him now. He puts little sticks in his mouth, he’ll eat the newspaper, he’ll eat labels off of toys. I can always get the big things out of his mouth but he always swallows the paper. I take these things away and replace them with his toys but he will find a way to get to something he’s not allowed. Please tell me I’m not the only one going through this. I can’t allow anyone to babysit him because i can’t trust that he won’t eat something he shouldn’t. I can’t watch him every single second of the day because I have another child :(

My baby does the same thing. It helped when I restricted how far he can go so I gated the living room and out away unsafe things. He does occasionally find something and if he does I take my finger a sweep it out his mouth. I think it’s normally cause of the teething. 🤷🏽‍♀️ I’m still learning though.

Lol same here! It's like babies use all 5 senses to explore that one thing they found 😆. Or at least see, touch, CHOMP.

Kill himself? Sorry but that was a really disturbing choice of words here. He’s being a normal baby, make sure his environment is safe and he doesn’t have access to things he should t put in his mouth, and feed him small bites of food at a time.

We came back from doing the weekly shop the other day and as I was unpacking all the food bits, I put toothpaste to the side, my little girl picks it up and starts waving it around so I’m thinking there’s no harm in her playing with a cardboard box with toothpaste inside while I keep an eye on her and put away the rest of the shopping… well I was wrong 😅 she dug her little tooth into the cardboard and made a hole in the box and started chewing on it, the second I saw her chewing I took it off her and proceeded to try and take the cardboard out of her mouth. Luckily she did spit it out but it balled up from her chewing it so it could have been bad if she swallowed it. No more cardboard for this baby 😅

My son has bit through a wipe package, a piece of the label from a formal can, string from the pompom beanies, and eats my cellphone on a regular basis. It doesn’t matter how “child-friendly” your environment is, babies don’t know their fingers from their toes. They don’t know how to play or make safe choices yet. It’s not your fault if they get their hands on something they shouldn’t, all you can do is take it away and redirect them. Which you already said you do so keep doing it mama, over and over! Don’t get frustrated, you’re not alone we’re all dealing with it. #April2024Babies He will eventually begin to pick up on it and this phase will pass like every other one. You got this, keep your head up love and ignore the Karen’s pls!

my girl is obsessed with eating paper of all varieties including toilet paper. somehow someway she always manages to find it and i can almost never get it away from her once she has it.

Yes thank you Heather, it’s called a joke but I forget we’re not allowed to say anything in this day and age that could be misconstrued for fear of offending. Thanks everyone, I’m glad I’m not the only one :) he keeps trying to eat our house plant leaves and he actually is beginning to understand the word no because he looks at me like he knows he’s doing something wrong. I will keep redirecting 👍🏼

Same! I have to watch him constantly because he'll find a way to get to things he cant have. Knives in the dishwasher are his current obsession!

Yessss @Kerry I FORGOT ABOUT THE DISHWASHER!! 🤦🏾‍♀️ I will never understand the fascination with smelly dishes, but hopefully chores will be a breeze later on down the line! 😂

They want everything BUT THEIR TOYS 🤣
