My son’s nickname is sani (full name kaysani) and he says his nickname but not his full name. I don’t think my 1.5 year old will learn his full name until a little older saying that it’s a little more complicated 😅but definitely speaks very well almost full sentences and will reply in conversation and also says sissy (pregnant with baby girl rn) calls his cousins by their names (wren , addie) so ig if you just use their names more in context and sentences they will start saying it just like any other word like mama / dada and so on
Mine has so many nicknames but he definitely knows his own name.
My son name Aspen but I end up calling him honeybear or sweetie when he starts fussing and I don't know why or how it started but he seems to like it and ofc I call him by his name and ask him " is Aspen a handsome little devil " and he smiles so big I just make sure he gets called his name more than a nicknames since his only 2 almost 3 months
as long as his name is in incorprated somewhere it will be okay. i called my daughter "tiny" exclusively for the first 6 months of her life, until i started having anxiety about the very issue ur mom is being so mean about. i started calling her by her name but she loved to be called tiny. shes 1 year now, and i mostly call her by her name and she responds. in fact if anyone besides me calls her tiny she shouts BIG !!!!
You aren’t damaging his brain haha. That’s silly old generation talk. My eldest has so many nicknames. She’s now 5 and she knows her name perfectly well. My son is almost three, he has a lot of nicknames and sometimes he calls himself his nickname, but if someone calls him his proper name he knows who they are on about and who that are talking too. And my 9 month old same for her, she has nicknames, but she still knows her name when someone calls her I!
My nick name is Shelley and did not know my legal name till grade school 🤷🏼♀️ I personally think its fine plus you can teach them. My daughter has a nick name that my In Laws call her and her dad as well. She knows both are referring to her.
I rarely call my kids with their real name 🤷🏻♀️
Thank you so so much all for your very reassuring (and cute !) comments, thanks for sharing !!
My son has all kinds of nicknames. Burrito (he’s Mexican and Asian), TJ, Little man, Papa/Papas. As he got older, he learned his name. He’s 5 years old. He responds to all his nicknames and his own name. Your baby is 9 months old, he will learn his name eventually. It’s not that big of a deal or that serious at that age.
