I just kept carbs to a quarter of my plate. I lost 5lbs after being diagnosed purely from the diet change and once I had given birth, I was a few lbs under what I weighed before I got pregnant. Nobody was concerned. It’s normal if you had a carb heavy diet like me. I just made sure to have a snack inbetween breakfast and lunch, and again between lunch and dinner. And on an evening actually! But the snacks were things I knew didn’t spike me like Greek yogurt with some fruit in, baby bells, nuts, protein bars etc. even having all those snacks and 3 decent meals I lost weight. I should probably do that again….
I'm the same as Nire. I spoke with my fertility dietician and they did the same thing. They broke down my meals and snacks with the amount of carbs in each I needed.
I would ask them how many carbs you should have at each meal and snack. I was also given a carb count and it helps you feel safe in eating carbs to have a number. Once you have a carb number you just read the packaging and to figure out how much you can eat.
@Christina they have given me how much carbs I’m allowed to have. But I’m still struggling. I hit my lunch and dinner allowance but struggling with breakfast and snacks.
@Jess that’s what I’m hoping it is. That I’m just losing weight due to the diet change. I am overweight to begin with. I don’t feel terrible. Actually feel better than ever. Breakfast and snacks are were I tend to struggle with my carb intake
@Heather Then I would eat what you like. If you like cereal or toast with breakfast then have that just check the serving size and carbs. I used to eat Oreos with my protein for snack. I could eat 3 Oreos and stay in my carb count. I always write down what I eat and how much and if it spiked my blood sugar I would avoid it.
@Christina I might have to do that bring some things back and eat in moderation. I have gotten protein cereal that I’ve been trying to eat as a snack.
I was told very clearly by the GD midwives not to cut out carbs altogether as you do need them. I simply have altered my ratios and my readings are all fine. For breakfast, granary or seeded toast usually, sometimes 2 crumpets. Lunch is usually something proteiny but today I was too busy at work so I had chicken noodles. When having dinners, carbs may be only 20-30% of my full meal, with rest focussed on proteins/veg. I do find that plenty of water helps too so make sure your setting yourself water goals! Xx
Its all fine in moderation but you defo need carbs!! Xx
You still need carbs when having gd just not loads I’m in uk but I followed gestational diabetes uk Facebook followed there diet of pairing foods pairing carbs with fat and protein etc
I was told how many carbs per meal I could have which was 30g, so (being carb oriented) I always made sure I had 30g of carbs with each meal so that I wasn’t limiting myself too much.
