What is the point in claiming carers allowance as someone on UC? 🇬🇧

My son has been awarded middle rate DLA for Autism and I have been told I should apply for carers allowance, I am on universal credit and I’ve just read that they deduct whatever it is you’re given from carers allowance so what is the point to claim for it if you still end up with the same amount each month? Please note - this isn’t me trying to squeeze more money from the government and I am not ungrateful for the amount I already received. I’m just confused as to what difference it would make to claim for carers allowance or what the benefits of doing so are? 🤷🏻‍♀️

This isn’t quite the question you asked, but are you getting the Carer’s to element of Universal Credit? If not it’s definitely worth applying for that https://www.turn2us.org.uk/get-support/information-for-your-situation/universal-credit-uc/additional-elements-of-universal-credit-uc

The reason for claiming carer’s allowance is you get national insurance credits when you claim it, https://www.carersuk.org/help-and-advice/financial-support/carer-s-allowance/

@Rebekah thank you for this! Really helpful xx

I claim carers element for my mum as I am her carer & that doesn’t get deducted from my money x
