Baby Constipation

My baby will be 4 months on Friday. She has been the happiest baby since birth- except for the last few weeks. She’s suddenly not pooping, gassy and goes through bouts of screaming/arching her back like she’s in pain. Her farts smell horrible too. She just went 9 days without pooping and then had a normal sized poop yesterday afternoon but it didn’t seem to bring her any relief. We have a doctor appointment tomorrow but I’m just curious if any other babies suddenly stopped pooping like this?? She is breastfed and I haven’t changed my diet at all.

My son is 4 months old, his pediatrician told me after 7+ days try mixing an ounce of prune juice and an ounce water into his normal bottles.

Yep. We did 1/2 an ounce of prune juice with 1/2 an ounce of water and within the hour he pooped. Longest he's gone without pooping was 4 days

I've also read that because breastmilk is more bioavailable, a baby might not poop everyday since there is less waste in the actual food. But I've also heard that breastfed babies typically poop more often. It's just more concerning if it's a solo formula fed baby that's not pooping, or if there is discomfort.

Also, make sure you're not eating many leafy green veggies like broccoli or Brussel sprouts

Did you baby recently start solids?

My baby girl is 4 months and breastfed. Breastfed babies can sometimes go days or even a week without pooping. My daughter has gone 7 days without pooping before and seemed very uncomfortable. I tried rubbed her stomach, gas medicine, bicycle legs, and everything you could think of. Then the 7th day I said I was going to take her to the drs the following day if she didn’t poop, then the morning of the 8th day she pooped. At 4 months babies are still developing their digestion system. As long as baby is having regular amounts of wet diapers it’s probably normal and nothing to cause for alarm. However the Best thing to do if you’re concerned is to take her to the drs as you mentioned.
